Why should I commute to an office on my own time and money to satisfy someone elses irrational demand of office attendance. As a software dev, I am perfectly capable of delivering work and communicating in a fully remote team.

My question I have for recruiters and companies that want me to interview for them that have office day requirements is this. "If my current employer can execute and deliver in a fully remote structure why can't you." Never got a good answer that didn't involve the word family, culture or someother bullshit phrase.

I'll go into the office for socials, big meetings or when I find it convenient to use the office hotdesking facilities. When I choose. Not on the whim of some boomer business owner that is going to give me shit when I only come in for 2 of my mandatory office days or some other nonsense. Fuck kikes. Fuck boomers.

Two reasons. One: the boomers in question are 30-40 years obsolete and are completely incapable of comprehending ideas like WFH. Their brains are completely fried from decades of TV and inhaling lead gas fumes, which means anything involving computers and the internet is inherently bad because they are too retarded to figure out how shit works. Two: so said boomer fuck can micromanage the team and act like king of shit mountain because they got a title in some literally who company and want to believe they’re far more important than they really are. Maybe they know deep down their job means fuck all and they just want to pretend otherwise instead of chilling and raking in the easy money without risking a stroke, maybe they need viagra a little too much, either way they can’t stop sniffing asses and acting like a dickhead. And whats a dickhead without a captive audience?
>>51044189
I dunno how it is across the world but here middle management and HR has severely fucked up absolutely everything in regards to jobs, which should really say something as to just how even more productive things could be if these cancerous tumors were excised for good. For as supposedly lasy as everyone has gotten, productivity rates have quite literally never been higher, but wages have never followed and in some cases even regressed comparatively. Obviously that bubble is going to burst sooner or later, Covid just sped up the process a bit.

I am convinced that most middle class Boomers have never actually worked a hard day's work in their lives. Everything was so fucking slow through all the years that they occupied positions where they really would've had to actually hustle - how the fuck are we supposed to believe these people even did much of anything during years when everything existed on hard-copies that had to get physically carried around everywhere? To clarify. In no place has implementing socialism resulted in technocrats displacing managers. Nor has it resulted in widespread wealth redistribution from the ruling classes to the working class. Socialism is an arrangement by which capitalism is stabilized through a high level of basic guarantees to the working class. American mixed-market economies used to achieve the same thing by allowing mobility through education, high paying jobs, and entrepreneurship. Neither of those is an arrangement that has sidelined the managerial class, nor have the resulted in the bourgeois being pushed out by technocrats, nor have they resulted in large scale redistribution of large fortunes.

That's what I mean when I say that leftists are deeply confused about the implications of what's happening right now. Too much ideological dogma has a way of fucking up one's perception of reality.

I will say, there are the boomers who realize they've become obsolete in the modern workforce and have ran with that. They have their fancy title, large paycheck, they don't really give a fuck about anything. They check in once a week, take as much vacation as possible, go home to their house they paid 100k for 35 years ago and now its worth 1 mil. They have stock options, because companies used to give stock options, and are waiting to retire and live their twilight years rich as fuck, born in the perfect time, economy wise.

Guess who’s about to get their ass laid off? When you’re 59 and you fire half your tech team because you wanted to “have some socialization” in the office, you’re fucking done. Meanwhile my department head lets anyone who wants to WFH permanently, and he hasn’t lost anyone since February. I agree. They lived in a time when an unskilled worker could command the wages to lead a comparable lifestyle to a skilled tradesman or educated professional. It was a golden age of about 50 years or so. It's not so much that their perspective on things today is delusional, it's that it was formed in a time where it made perfect sense, it's that it no longer makes any sense at all ~70-80 years later.

I know I am seeing a lot of back-and-forth on this topic, but I really need to push back and raise some red flags here.

Having an on-site office presence is foundational to our ability to drive efficiencies in a corporate landscape. It is in our DNA. Sure, there is no 'one size fits all' or silver bullet and some are just boilerplate solutions, leveraged to the hilt and really only keeping us at a 30,000-foot-view of things. Being on-site, however, really allow us to get better granularity, find better directional-indicators, or loop back and dive deep into some critical issues on a go-forward basis.

I think if you all start spending more time in the office again, you'll find yourself trending toward the positive, but you'll have to keep an eye on the puck. Gut through it, reduce thrash, and let's stay in lock-step on this. Yes, we will synergize!

What's the root cause of the hatred of Corporate office spaces? I'll put my layman's hat on and guess that it comes from movies such as Office Space and Dilbert cartoons. But we all know that these are fictional spaces, and real office spaces allow us to touch base in a much more efficient manner.

I have to time-box this comment, as I have a hard-stop in a moment when I will have to jump onto a call. So, just one more point that I want to cover-off on: let's socialize the idea of having more office presence and loop back to see whether we're being more impactful. From a management standpoint, I think that we can get the traction to do it.

So, net/net, ignore the naysayers, sidebar the folks that are stuck in the weeds, and don't waste cycles or bandwidth on folks that don't align strongly with this mission. Try it out, and we'll have another touch point in a little while to see if we've moved the needle. Remember, our north star hasn't changed. We're still championing our core values remotely and we will only do it better in person.

If you need me, I will be online again in a bit.

He was so proud of sorting those printers too

This might happen to Gen X and Millenials when they reach that age as well.
The brain starts slowing down a lot at that age, and it becomes very hard to learn new things.
They tend to just rely on experience they picked up over 3-4 decades of work, but cannot really handle new problems that well.
With the internet changing things so rapidly, they end up very out of touch.
But the way society works is that old people always hold the majority of the wealth and power, because these are slowly accumulated over the lifespan.

Back when I was an office wagie it was boomers who did by far the least amount of work. I estimate something like 90% of the actual productive output was generated by wagies under 40 years old. Admittedly some of the boomers in upper management have their own set of responsibilities some of which are legitimate and challenging, but the boomers who never got past middle management were the types who were always browsing the internet or chatting it up at their desks with other boomers. They would become extremely obstinate if ever asked to do anything outside their narrow comfort zone of whatever menial tasks they were accustomed to performing for the past 25 years, and probably produced a couple hours' worth of output per week. I knew a boomer who used Excel but treated it like a pen and paper, refusing to learn formulas or any of the functionality beyond typing a number into a cell. The funny thing about the "wfh doing absolutely nothing" meme is that millennials and zoomers just started doing under the cover of wfh what boomers had already been doing brazenly and openly in the office for years.

Had to re enter the office but it's hybrid. Honestly don't care either way but my job performance is based on deliverables and maintaining relationships with outside entities (all of which happens virtually now).

Boomers can't reconcile this and think they need to "see" you working or you aren't doing your job, yet my performance can be determined without even speaking to me. Basically if I'm all caught up the day consists of staying green on teams, taking calls, and promptly responding to emails and it's definitely more laid back to do it at home rather than looking busy and alert at a desk for my boomer overlord.

This is probably the most true post in this thread. We are seeing the destruction of the managerial class as we speak. It's not going to be pretty.

When a millennial technocrat wagie can replace the supervisor and project lead while maintaining all tasking as if nothing really changed, the higher-ups DO notice believe it or not. On my project alone we've cut out five roles that used to be eaten up by boomers who are now retired simply because the actual tasking wasn't much of anything.

Not only that, a lot of these higher up managerial positions are just fucking depressing. I don't know why anyone smart would want to do them because you're typically rotting away keeping up appearances instead of just working on something interesting and challenging.

I would stick as a Statistician if I were you, honestly (even though the work is 95% the same). The field of data science is bloated garbage filled with poojeets and women who think because they can put a plot together in Python that they're le-epic data visualizers. Because of this, basically every single data science job is FLOODED with applicants, the majority of which are actually garbage, but because it has to be sifted through by HR roasties there just is no hope of getting the job. It's much better going for Statistician jobs, Op. Res. Jobs, or Quant jobs (all of which you are pretty much qualified for and all of which can be full remote).

In addition, the majority of data science roles are just statistics, I'm not even joking. It's just a hot catch all buzzword at this point, even though the field is 100% real (dealing with high dimensional data IS a skill, but that's typically not what these 'data scientists' even do)

The biggest revelation for management has probably been that techies WANT to be productive. Traditional management training and MBA programs focus on motivating/compelling your workers to produce and how to get them on board with your company's vision. With techies, it's almost the reverse. Give them freedom in implementation, solicit their feedback on business decisions they're being asked to implement, take their feedback seriously, and then get out of their way. This means that as more of a business's activities are transformed into software processes, fewer and fewer human managers are required, without even getting into the compounding effects of automation.

I can understand why. Intermodal containers basically wrecked the "moving things between forms of transportation" aspect of urban employment. A preference for wider, flatter factories removed most urban manufacturing jobs. If you take away the office towers, cities become fucking worthless as a place for anything but government, maintaining or using network/shipping infrastructure, service jobs, and monuments to past glories. It'd be the largest urban collapse since the end of the Roman Empire. All the tens (hundreds?) of millions of nonwhite urban vote cattle will be left on their own to rot.

You need the right jobs for it. Daily standup meetings and shit are made specifically to try acting as a gotcha for this kind of thing, but you can find jobs that don't engage in that bullshit. Can't tell you how though, I work in crypto so it's just the standard for us to work multiple jobs here. I'm personally rolling with 4 jobs at once and 1 team just has me on retainer so I just get free money from them. I still work pretty hard with 4 jobs being juggled but it's more like actually working 8 hours a day instead of working 30 minutes and spreading it out over the rest of the day arbitrarily.

Probably a self-employed contractor tradie that hates his wife, hates his kids, hates his dog, hates what's on television, and watches it anyways because his joints are always killing him

I don’t have a dog in the WFH fight so I really don’t care either way but I definitely appreciate having less traffic.
I don’t get the mindset of making people endure shit just because someone else had to though. My industry is pretty miserable and as someone in a decently high manager position I try to make things suck less for the people around me not more just because I had to endure a lot of shit as I making my way.

Its also driven by the fact that there are groups who benefit from companies renting office space (NYC landlords for example) and are desperately doing everything they can to keep people AND companies being rentoids.

I like going to the office but then again I work on Scotia plaza in the upper floors. Feels nice looking down at the peasants.
