The disparity between medicine and tech work that you are noticing here is that medicine front loads the hard work before evolving into potentially help desk tier cognitive work, while tech spreads that hard work out over more time.


I'd say you don't have to survive to be a CTO to be comfy in tech though. I would say director or even senior manager would be where it chills out

300k/year coders are valued more for their instantaneous productivity in a moment of time; an ability to learn a variety of short term skills as they come up, while a doctor (or tech director) will be valued for accrued knowledge and experience.

I'm about 30 years old and trying to transition from 300k/year mid-level engineer work. If you're not the right combination of dedicated/talented/interested enough to become THE GUY in terms of coding, I'd say take the management pill in some form. It's a lot easier to level up there.
