I’m interested in buying the dip on Pokémon and possibly YuGiOh. Have they bottomed out yet? Are PSA 10’s of vintage common cards like pic related worth accumulating? Or are they not scarce enough? What’s the best thing to accumulate in the $100-300 price range in your opinion?

Reminder that when fake Pokemon cards were selling for such high prices, THAT was your top signal. This will take years, maybe even decades, to sort itself out. For Magic the Gathering this is the number one product to stock up on and hoard right now. Double Masters 2022 Collector Booster boxes. Make sure you’re getting the box with four packs as they look very similar to the box with one pack. No, you want to collect chase cards that are scarce, yet have high demand for nostalgia reasons. For those reasons the sets/cards I would recommend to buy are

Base Set 1st edition (only holo rares, not the common pikachu in your pic rel)
Neo Revelation/Neo Destiny (only the "Shining" cards in these sets)
Expedition, Aquapolis, Skyridge (the "Crystal" chase cards are worth a lot here)
Gold star pokemon cards from Ex Deoxys, Ex Delta Species, Ex Power Keepers, Ex Crystal Guardians, Ex Legend Maker, Ex Holon Phantoms, Ex Dragon Frontiers.Gold stars have retained their value VERY well in this recent dip

maybe you can dabble with some modern alt arts but who knows

Yeah definitely. I would still say there are tons of options. But you would probably want to venture out of Gen 1 though.

I would recommend Rare Holos from Neo Destiny/Expedition/Aquapolis/Skyridge. Also EXs from the EX Era.

The Ereader era (Expedition/Aquapolis/Skyridge) is generally thought of the best era of pokemon cards.

Here are some examples. Top row is neo destiny holos, bottom is aquapolis holos

1st edition kickstarter mothman holo was going for around 10-15k before the dip i think now you can scalp on on ebay or discord for around 3500-4000$ (still a bit steep).

going price for 1st edition psa 10 is about as you said for the dip if you can snipe one for 300-400 go for it, you could also get the raw mint single for a cheap price (~$225). If you think in terms of pokemon - theres the 2nd edition cryptid nation set where you can get a 2nd edition full holo mothman raw for about $20. If the singles are too expensive buy booster boxes and hold over time. booster boxes have like 20+ hits. Promo mothmans might be a good

ultimiately yeah there are a lot of psa 10 mothmans/1st ed cards, which is why i kinda recommend getting kickstarter variants, its anyones guess where this could go, but so far the tcg is going strong and looks like itll be around for a while.

Youre better off buying booster boxes or pinclub/revive promo boxes which are limited prints (~50-300 prints) and grading yourself and could go up in value later. join the discord to get a feel for the market and what the rare cards are

anytime. I am guessing you are referring to new sealed product because old stuff is super expensive? Not personally, though its probably a low risk investment getting a ETB or booster box of some of the most popular sets recently. For a collectible to be in demand it has to feel attainable. PSA cards have the right blend of prestige and attainability to have peak cultural relevance.

>>51025938

>The Ereader era (Expedition/Aquapolis/Skyridge) is generally thought of the best era of pokemon cards.

It was, and I am glad the collectors market realizes it. Wizards was doing the best they could to try and kill the game and they were the last 3 wizards sets.

Those sets saved the game, and at the time only players were buying cards. It's why we have supporters and split rarity levels. (Cheap non-foil cards for play, shiny cards to collect).

The game itself is worth getting into. Nintendo supports it well and is the one major game company that's fine with making "Tons of money" instead of "all the money possible as fast as possible". You can buy into T1 decks for $100 in paper and less than $20 online. A good reputation in the TCG/Trading communities will help you secure deals as well as cash out without disgusting fees and scam risk.

OP here. I had my heart set on hoarding the Jungle 1st Edition common Pikachu #60 1999 card showing in the photo. I was 7 years old when they come out, and they’re nostalgic as fuck for me. I know they are common as fuck, with over 2000 PSA 10s in existence. And the current $100+ price is certainly remarkable. How do you truly assess the value? Or where do you draw the line?

Also, can anyone comment on the profitability of buying ungraded cards and attempting to get PSA 10. As an investor is it better to just trade the Graded cards directly ?

The thing about Pokemon cards as an investment is that they have a definite expiration date. As soon as the franchise dies off and young people don't care about it anymore (which is inevitable) all your cards go to zero. They become curious relics of a bygone cultural fad, like hoola-hoops or yo-yos. But they don't even have historical value because there are literally billions of them.
