no single drug is going to prevent all the side effects of not getting enough sleep. and every drug you take to try and combat one effect of sleep deprivation will also introduce some side effects.

all it will be good for is for soldiers on a week or two week mission behind enemy lines to hold back sleep deprivation effects for a while at the expense of something else later.

if humans want not to sleep long term they'd probably need totally different genes.

the most I could see for long term use is drugs that let you go to sleep faster and more effectively so that you only need maybe 4 or 5 hours of sleep a night.

The drug in the OP picrel was used on sleep-deprived monkeys and the ones who took it functioned cognitively as well as monkeys who were allowed to sleep.

Also, brain scans showed that the brains of those who took the stuff look exactly like the brain scans of those that were rested and allowed to sleep.

The side effect profile includes:

Somnolence (drowsiness)
Fatigue
Headache
Sleep paralysis (temporary inability to move or speak, which typically occurs while falling asleep or upon waking)
Nightmares or abnormal dreams
Hypnagogic hallucinations (hallucinations that occur while falling asleep)
Dizziness
Cough
Diarrhea
Dry mouth
Upper respiratory infection
Palpitations
Tachycardia (rapid heartbeat)
Anxiety
Psychomotor hyperactivity (restlessness with unintentional physical movements)
Pruritus (itching)
Nausea
Vomiting

Its actually kind of funny. This could solve the housing crisis in a way. House prices could be free to skyrocket into the billions per home if this drug would make it so people dont need a place to sleep at night. Instead, people would only need to rent cheap pods for recreation time or they could just spend time hanging out in the city buying things 24/7. It'd be a win win situation for both rentoids and homeowners. Rent goes down and zestimates go up.

what the fuck is sleep replacement? This sounds extremely dangerous. You want to replace a highly complexes mind and body repair mechanism that has evolve for millions of years, with a batch of chemicals? This makes no sense. There is no way some wacky pill in the year 2022 can replace sleep. Absolutely zero chance that this thing does anything more than make people go insane, and become completly sick.

>Why would home prices go up if fewer people need homes?
A few reasons: luxury item status, ability to rent out small fractions of space for short periods of time means prices will trend towards rental extraction value, inflation (velocity of money goes up if people arent sleeping), zoning restrictions will likely get tighter as less people sleep and are out and about at all times, single family homebuilders jacking up prices to offset inflationary pressures and setting higher floors, etc.

I may have misspoke when I said rent would "go down". Rather it opens up room for chicken coop style pods to become available for rent to the people who dont sleep. It's still a win win for all parties assuming rentoids simply want a place to cool off or store things.

In short think of it this way - rent trends towards the pricing you see at storage units while home prices trend towards some fraction of the cumulative 30 year profits you'd see when owning a storage unit business.

Then one day someone writes an academic journal about GPU applications for machine learning algorithms. Next day some crazy fuck invents something called cryptocurrency mining.
Would it be crazy nonsense for GPU prices to begin skyrocketing knowing that the videogame market is currently trash, or should you consider that maybe the rules are changing right in front of your eyes and that you might need to check yourself because you don't truly know if *anything* has an absolute single fixed usecase which is guaranteed to determine value?

Why would you NOT want your brain and body to go through a very efficient recovery process? The 7 to 9 hours you spend sleeping is literally the most important thing you do after breathing and drinking.

People would unironically take this thinking they would add so much productivity to their lives.
Actually, they would just watch more useless videos, more pron, and consume more sugar and pharmaceuticals.

It would take even more while being awake. If you want more efficiency, think of ways of being productive WHILE sleeping. Maybe enhanced lucid dreaming technology?

This is instinctively a bad idea as many anons have pointed out itt. On the face of it, the market will be horribly affected by strongarming people into doing who knows what to their body in order to be competitive and wages will be negotiated on a baseline of “16 hours a day is the norm.”

Biologically speaking, a few anons have pointed out actual problems so far. Memory consolidation during sleep is a big one. The big problem is that this drug will merely keep you awake without stimulating those sorts of essential pathways, which are why you sleep in the first place. Another important mechanism is activating the glymphatic system in order to drain excess protein buildup. Nervous pathway alteration (neuroplasticity) causes unneeded neurotransmitters to shed off of synapses, and the proteins will build up into prons or simple plaques if not dealt with. This is pretty grave as it’s the basis for diseases like Alzheimer’s.

Do not trust any big pharma kikes, full stop. Especially with a claim as outlandish as curing sleep. Science is no longer about discovery, knowledge, or the greater good.

Wrong. Nobody will HAVE a human body any longer as it's a mere vehicle to the mind and more suitable ones will be engineered inside and outside of the cybersphere, altough very few will have the need, let alone the authorization, to leave cyberspace from birth within it to deletion.

I've tried modafinil and while it kept me awake for 48 hours, it gave me a low-grade headache past the 20 hour mark. And I slept like 24 hours after so it was like I had to recoup the lost sleep anyway.

To elaborate the hippocampus encodes your spatial location, as well as dealing with episodic memory. Send a rat through a course and you get cells firing that correspond to specific locations. When the rat is still, they go through the course mentally, replaying the sequence of cells (locations) needed to get to the end. If you keep recording them while they're sleeping, you'll see the same sequence of cells replayed over and over, though compressed at a 7x speed, one reason why dreams last so long compared to how long you sleep, time is accelerated.
