If you held silver from 1950 to now, your money would be worth basically the same. Try doing that with the dollar. There's value in simply avoiding inflation and having a backup for collapse. Helps me sleep better at night anyway.

You are being fleeced by bullion dealers, there is no shortage of silver. The myth about COMEX being short on silver is just a scare tactic by retailers into making you panic buy silver. COMEX spot price is the real price of silver, there is no manipulation or any kind of conspiracy by bullion banks to suppress the price of PMs.

The thing about silver is that there's more than 100x as much in the ground as there is gold (which is also worthless), and its "industrial uses" are massively overrated because copper outclasses it for any conceivable use.

silver has been demonetized
gold is still money
part of gold's value comes from its uses as a commodity (including more abstract uses as an ornament, and more concrete uses as a tool (such as gold fillings))
part of gold's use comes from its value as money (this value as money adds to its value as a commodity, but ultimately depends on its use as a commodity)
silver still has value as a commodity.
silver used to have value as money (even the smallest useful gold coin is too large for everyday purchases)
silver no longer has value as money in the age of fiat
silver won't have value as money again even when fiat fails - we have technological solutions like pic related, and things like (100% reserve) debit cards etc
not using silver as money solves the awkward problem of gresham's law and issues related to using 2 metals for money at the same time.
silver's value as a commodity is here to stay.
silver's value as a money has gone.
that's why the gsr of today and tomorrow is much higher than the gsr of the past.
yes, the silver price is manipulated. yes, it will surely increase. yes, the system is destined to collapse and the gsr will return to a "natural" level.

BUT

> the old gsr (with silver and gold both being money) WILL NOT RESEMBLE the new gsr (where gold is money, and silver is a commodity only)

if you bought silver thinking the gsr would go from 1:100 to 1:10, i'm afraid you bought a dream that ain't coming true

I agree with this and am only invested in silver for its use as a commodity, not a money/currency.

However the GSR will in fact correct to lower than 1:10. Silver does not have to be reinstated as money for that to happen. Platinum is solely an industrial metal and in the late 1990s was worth twice as much as gold. Today it sits at half the price of gold. Rhodium is worth something like 10 times as much as gold right now.

GSR of 1:10 is FUD.

If price of silver goes up, less cellphones for kids, less electronics, less Green new deal bullshit. Silver is key, and that's why they keep it cheap. In 1980 10x more silver existed above ground than gold today more gold is above ground than silver
in 1980 Silver was mainly used for photography industrially. Today Silver is used in literally thousands of different industrial applications and it basically isn't substitutable.
Production of silver is basically inelastic since it is mainly mined as a byproduct of other metals like copper.
The chart you posted is from 2017, if this chart was posted today that CPI adjusted chart would by like $1200+ usd silver.

We know. However with the US dollar becoming rapidly worthless and other countries looking to ditch it as their reserve in favor of more regional, more stable gold-backed and silver-backed currencies, having your wealth stored in US dollars seems like an unnecessary risk.
