A trade of that size doesn't go unnoticed, but if it's broken up into a bunch of smaller trades and you are just a retail trader looking at a generic options feed, it's hard to tell. However, if you're a market maker, you have a much better sense for the size and direction of the aggregated orders because you're the one on the other side. So Ryan Cohen comes and sells his calls over the past couple of days, and it's very obvious to the largest options MMs (Citadel & SIG) that he closed. We also know he has to file a 13D within 2 days of the first sale (Aug16 + 2 days = today, at the latest) and that the filing has to come outside of trading hours. The obvious thing to do is lean the board to accumulate a massive amount of short delta at the end of each day and buy it back from retail the next day at a massive discount.
