means there will be layoffs soon i work in manufacturing too and slowing down so that there is actually enough work for a shift is always the first sign. last time i got laid off i was running these parts that took 4 hours of machine time per part and that was the only thing i was doing for a few weeks before they got rid of me.

This is my experience too. I always work in a fast pace but lately it feels like me and my co workers are in a silent agreement to work slower so we have something left for the next day

It seems like the whole industry is slowing down lately I work in a job shop so we get a lot of one off jobs and the things people want these days are impossible to make. they got a bunch of coolege guys designing the parts that don't know how to design stuff with manufacturability in mind. Been multiple jobs that we just had to give up on .000x tolerances, mirror surface finishes all over, tiny threads with 3b tolerance. its getting so annoying because you come to work and know you're going to just be spending all day making scarp metal
