The Fund is designed for investors who want a cost effective and convenient way to track the value of the U.S. dollar relative to a basket of the six major world currencies - the euro, Japanese yen, British pound, Canadian dollar, Swedish krona and Swiss franc (collectively, the "Basket Currencies"). The Index is a rules-based index composed solely of long U.S. Dollar Index futures contracts that trade on the ICE futures exchange (USDX® futures contracts). It’s a longer term play not so much a trade. One data point also doesn’t mean so much. The base case is that inflation is broadening and "sticky" and that the fed has to go further. It’s speculating that the 10 yr is going to be between 3 and 3.5% EOY. QT is also going to start at some point adding downward pressure.

Here’s the midwit take I’ve been hearing for weeks from people who literally didn’t even know what the CPI was until CNBC started talking about it:

>gas is down man!!! Inflation is over!!! We are finally moving on and the fed can pivot, thus stocks should rally!

Meanwhile energy is literally only 9% of CPI, shelter peaks on an 12-18 month lag (Q1-Q2 23 and is 32% of CPI), labor market is blazing hot leading to a wage price spiral we are starting to see, and labor costs have gone up while productivity has gone down. Service costs have gone up, and core PCE came in hot last month. Other than 9% energy, literally no inflation metrics have peaked. So yeah, it’ll be less than last month (priced in), but it may overshoot estimates and maybe even have a 9 handle.

The nowcast for next month is literally the same as it is for this month, 8.8%. Sorry, but when every midwit points to gas and thinks they are so smart and enlightened for looking as crude futures, I gotta take the opposite trade on this one. It’s not personal, you’re just not right.

stopped reading at "wage price spiral." fucking fantasyland.
the fed increases the money supply, that is inflation, period. if it does not reverse course, the money will find its way into prices. wages are just another market price, there is nothing special about them.
the fed creates inflation by incentivizing all banks across the entire country, simultaneously, to accept new risks according to some fairly straightforward objective measurements of safety ("stress testing" and the like) and to then extend credit up to the edge of those limits.

okay so that you'll find in the annual reports that the company publishes and in interviews and sometimes in earnings calls. from time to time they will explain how their operation creates value. you will basically never see that in the accounting, or at least, not before someone else sees it in the narrative.
so to create a bullshit example from my own past, NIO in late 2018 was obviously a buy compared to TSLA. among many reasons it exhibited one comparative advantage that existed then. TSLA had promised battery swap for over a decade and never delivered it. NIO delivered it, proved with video it takes 4 minutes to do by robot, and then rolled it out at swap stations on a major route between i think beijing and shanghai. at no real additional cost, because they were already losing money anyway, they basically eliminated range anxiety for their earliest customers. you couldn't possibly have seen it in the accounting, but where you maybe could see it was in unit sales and in user reviews on youtube.

kind of dumb to worry about it. that depends on how much sidelined cash is actually available. since most traders are fairly well leveraged already, and after all a geriatric is still in office whose party is facing a huge midterms loss, we may not see a multi-day US rally unfold. if the number had been another 3-4 points lower well then you'd really see something.

well your best option is to find out what "high" means for a dividend in today's environment. i can explain in terms of REITs. a "high" dividend right now would be like 11%, and if you buy it, you'll lose money.
a high dividend that you can actually expect to receive for longer than a year, with no loss of principal, would be more like 5%.

I have to admit, this is genuinely the end of the bear market. The indices are going to be up 3+% today and are not going to slow down. That's going to put us well beyond "bear market rally" territory. It's unbelievably fucking retarded, but the market can remain retarded longer than you can remain solvent. You need to adjust your understanding of things, and I think I finally have. Yes, life is the worst it has ever been. Yes, the middle class doesn't exist anymore. But all these things are to the BENEFIT of the elite, and stocks belong to the elite. Go long, not because the fate of the country is bullish, but because the fate of the ELITES is bullish. It was a good run, fellow rational human beings.

It can still be used as a type of ground truth that needs to be reconciled with whatever thoughts I might have. A sanity check of sorts.

Barring startups and new companies, a consistent success in, let's say, R&D will be reflected in the financials, but as you say not initially. For that you'd need to look at segment/market structure, features of each companies' products, strategy each one is following etc.
