How do shoe businesses work? I don't mean place that sell shoes, I mean the companies that create the shoes like Adidas. How do the designers come up with shoes that their customers want to buy?

I just walk into some random shoe shop where its always sort of crowded. Try some shoes and if they feel comfortable enough I buy it if it looks okay. Takes about 20 minutes for sport shoes and 5 minutes for my office shoes.
