It's sort of a prisoner's dilemma sort of thing.
Most people wouldn't care if the lotto disappeared, but when it gets to a certain size... Well, people think:
> Wow, some normie fuck is going to win millions and millions of dollars. Why them and not me? Fuck it, I'll buy a ticket, I deserve it just as much as any of you stupid fucks.
Now, a lot of those types of people are doing to be DISGUSTED when some random stupid fuck (that wasn't them just as if they didn't buy a ticket) wins a billion dollars. I'll admit, I get a twinge of envy even without buying tickets. I feel like I'd fix the whole planet with 300 million bucks of seed money: So does everyone. And that's why so many people play.
