German brokers tried to split shares to cover the stock split issued as a dividend, they got called out for fraud, had to delete all of them and start sucking dick for real shares to cover customers positions. Customers who held before issuance date were entitled to receive additional shares at a 3-to-1 basis of their original holdings. Germans tried to split the existing shares, obviously that doesn't hold up on the back-end as shares they created by splitting existed ones aren't real, customers got wind of this and tried to direct register their shit, brokers got fucked and are fucked until they find the shares they need to cover customer positions. It wasn't even the spiciest thing that happened with gme today, iBroker got busted hard for crediting customer accounts with short positions because they didn't have the shares to issue because they were never issued any shares from the dividend stock split issuance from the DTCC - most likely because they never actually held their customers shares to begin with.

It's all hard proof more shares are held than should exist. Which means the squeeze is real. Verification not required.

The fee for paper shares is 100-500$ per share as it has to be officially removed from the DTCC and shipped to you, and they do not like doing that. It is possible though and you do unironically unfuck yourself doing it so long as you're okay with going to the NYSE floor to physically sell your shares, and that's assuming you can find a buyer so it'd have to be one hell of a happening to make it worth it. Is okay fren, most people don't know this or don't care to know it because in all honesty most of the time a cost-for-difference system for stock trading works out and is approximately """fair""" all things considered. The major exception is that it allows for all sorts of fuckery, and I'm talking about the kind of fuckery enabling that allows for taking down empires from within and crippling nations when taken to extremes. It's still very possible to make a profit in the current system, and even enough of a profit to still make money when considering the insane tax burden on those profits, but the way stocks work in the current system allows for the common man to get fucked relentlessly with a cactus because he doesn't actually own shit, can be rugged without notice and without recourse due to terms he agreed to without reading (that are barely readable or followable as a rule because doublespeak and intentional complexity) and most of all because what he thinks he owns and controls is actually wholly outside of his control and his own positions can be used against him. This isn't even getting into how brokers fuck everyone that uses them on best execution to grift pennies at a time hundreds of millions if not billions of times a day, nor does it address borrow fees they can collect lending out shares they shouldn't and say they won't, again because doublespeak, or like ten more posts and two more hours of typing worth of methods to screw everyone who participates from the richest to the poorest.
