Why isn't MATIC it's own thing? I've never really got why it needs ETH at all, especially when it has it's own native token to transact value and to use it (something L2s like LN don't need). Also correct me if I'm wrong but wouldn't an L2, which isn't just a stand alone application in need of higher throughput, need to absorb the majority of the networks user base or the entire thing ceases to be a cohesive network and just becomes a loose collection of chains that can interact with each other through the base layer and, every now and again, write a group of transactions to the base blockchain (which seems like it doesn't ever have to happen). Why not just make your own L1 and use Cosmo's ibc at that point?
