If you think about machine learning models in terms of how much decision flexibility models have NNs are at the extreme. OLS linear regression has very little flexibility, polynomial has more convexity in it's decision process, SVMs using Kernel methods don't have to create lines anymore (the rigorous definition, vertical test), and then you can think of NNs and tree models as two sides of the same coin. In the end it is a decision process that follows an order. Neural networks are different from trees in the idea that all parts of the tree is ran, which makes it a lot slower. It also means there is more complexity so much so that these are actually a black box.

Why does this matter? Well the key here is noise. When you have super convex non-linear decision processes like with NNs you can pick up on non-linear patterns. Now this can be extremely helpful in many cases, but the issue is that random noise occurs mainly in an extremely non-linear fashion. So as you venture farther from your OLS linear regression you get a higher propensity to pick up noise. With OLS linear regression you don't even need to think about de-noising or engineering, maybe some dimensionality reduction as all models will suffer from sparse data, but not much to do. When you are able to pick up on the areas where most randomness (and thus overfit signals) occurs then lots of denoising is necessary. I am happy to discuss this a lot more, but the key point is LSTMs require so much engineering that you can really think of them as a merge tool, not a model. They merge your features into a prediction. You feed it raw price data for LE STONKS you get cool shit useful shit.

My point is when you engineer long term signals reduce your convexity in your decision process and get really convex short term. Take heed with the flexible choices though and make sure you denoise or just get so much data you get to say fuck it like with nanosecond data.

Oh it's a bear market rally/bull trap alright. Question is how far does it extend before it snaps. For S&P there is a lot of resistance around 4120 to 4190 area. That sticky area in the chart, along with the limited day time volume supporting this push, is the primary reason I decided to go short yesterday.
