this is an interesting angle from a hedge fund manager that I respect. on his twitter last night.

I’ll paste it out for you since it’s worth a read
1) Thread going into the FOMC print—as PMs we all like to talk about global macro, or individual stock picks. Long term, that’s what drives price action. Short term, none of that matters. All that matters is fund flows—redemptions, short covering, inflows, sector flows, etc…
2) Look at 2022, many large hedge funds are down 25%+. Year-end redemption notices start Nov 1. These guys have 3 months to turn it around or get redeemed. Everyone gets redemptions from time to time. Losing half your AUM bc you were long Ponzi is existential to your career…
3) Guys will fight like mad to make it back. This isn’t about performance for performance’s sake, this is about survival. You have to get to flat or your business goes poof. Down 25% and it’s poof anyway, so you take a shot. If you guess wrong and end down 40% you were dead anywa
4) Therefore, guys are forced to take shots on goal. Fix it by Nov 1, or lose the AUM. How do you fix it?? Certainly not in cash. You can bet big on the short side, maybe use options, but hard to put up big numbers that way. Instead, they’re forced to play long-sided…
5) Every datapoint shows that funds are massively underweight on long exposure. Huge cash positions, low gross, lower net exposure. These guys will all be forced to pivot long. Relative performance is cute when you’re down 5 and mkt is down 25. It means nothing when down 20 vs 25

6) The FOMC will do its thing, everyone will see a few hours/days of whipsaw action, but in the end, guys need exposure to save their careers. They are gonna have to buy it. Doesnt matter what Fed or economy or DXY or rates or GDP does. Guys have 3 months to stack basis points…

7) Think we get a sizable rally into the fall and sort it out from then. Guys just have to be long… As for me, I’m pretty damn long. Have highest exposure since the bottom in March 2020. Laid into GDP sensitive assets in late-June. Felt so confident that I’m on vacation…

8) It is amazing just how many dominant, near monopoly assets are 2-5x run-rate FCF. These are companies with 30%+ ROIC. Good Businesses haven’t been this cheap except Feb 2009 and March 2020. Difference is that those times were scary. Now isn’t scary. We may have a recession

9) Who cares about recession??You don’t buy amazing companies for the next quarter or 3. You buy them because of long-term compounding. When they give away great businesses this cheap, you simply stack them and ignore next Q. They will eventually be valued on stabilized numbers…

10) I have continually shat on compounders over the years It should tell you how cheap things are when roughly half of my book is compounders. I tend to think these all revalue soon. Ponzi was the last bubble, this cycle, guys need cash flow… Anyway, we all like to talk about stuff that makes us look smart (macro/fx/single stocks/etc.) That’s fine and good. We don’t talk enough about who’s screwed and has 100 days to save his career. Cornered animals do crazy things…
Tl;dr before redemption season starts, lots of cornered animals will try to save their gains

>his legacy company mongolia
Yeah Kuppy is a moron for that. Just remember that Kuppy literally spent years of his life in fucking Mongolia due to his convictions. He has always put his money where his mouth is.

> be me, kuppy
> be down 90% over the past 10 years investing in mongolia
> have a good couple of years
> figure that its time to blow up again
> think of and do literally the worst risk/reward trade in history of financial markets
> become even greater hero to doomers

Okay, fine, Kuppy fucked up with his Mongolia fund
BUT and I mean a BIG but. He is really damn good with his EDF - Praetoria.

He is one of the best EDF managers around. It would be a good space to explore but I’m not confident enough to pursue more event-driven strategies right now.
I know kuppy is good at ED strategies and I’ve read all of his letters. AFAICT he bets on a lot of long tail events. So kind of like Cornwall Capital from big short fame.
The thing is I don’t know if they have a reputation for longevity. I should check edgar to see if Cornwall even exists anymore. And kuppy probably posted a -10 in Q2 2022 based on the book he had going into April.

Example of Kuppy being an absolute badass with his distressed asset arb/event arb:

What happened was Valaris (VAL) went bankrupt in 2020 on the backs of oil futures going negative
a lot of pension funds and corporate junk bonds etfs hodl'd VAL bonds because well... they had a mandate to hodl junk bonds... when VAL finally restructured and those bondholders received equity - well, they had to sell b/c their mandate was to hold exposure to corporate debt even junk but NOT equity of cleaned up companies.

so when VAL re-listed... .....Kuppy's fund bought b/c well (a) he anticipated the selling pressure by yuuuge institutions to buy low initially... and (b) he is an oil bull and thesis is even offshore the worst drilling sector would benefit from the oil boom cycle eventually

Mongolia thesis was terrible tho

Bro lmao I fucking hated Kuppy when I first saw him on zer0es tv (this episode with Carson Block: https://www.zer0es.tv/masterclasses/major-sell-offs-from-insider-shares-unlocking/ ), he's got a really annoying demeanor and can't fucking present a simple slideshow well
>He's been making bold predictions nowadays building off his recent success to generate hype for those subs he sells.

Yep, he's been making some very interesting predictions. Kuppy is VERY bullish on home makers these days. This is what Kuppy said in his last newsletter:

"“I take a different view and believe that we’re in the early stages of a long-term housing boom caused by migration to low tax states along with a catch-up phase as home constructionrates were below trendline over the past decade. I believe that the US needs in excess of 1 million
new single-family homes each year, just to provide for population growth, ignoring the other factors.
As a result, these businesses do not appear to be at peak earnings; instead, I believe we are seeing a new baseline for earnings."

Maybe he's right about housing in the coming months, but he's been SOO wrong about housing recently lol. Look at his JOE investment. Omg lol. Yeah he’s been long JOE for about 2 years now. I suspect it was the position that also worked against him the most last Q; it dropped 30%+ in Q2

>which trade was this by the way, tankers?
Yeah tankers in mongolia or whatever the fuck. What a jole.

>His Russia trade might pay out too.. someday. Glad I ignored that trash though.

>I don't see VAL as a particularly good trade either. Way too early. I've made much more on my direct oil producer plays. I think his best event play was Thungela.

>His Russia trade? Like where he went long Ruble?
He bought RSX in back in Feb which has now been halted for 3+ months now with no clear direction towards the ETF holders ever getting paid out. To be fair it was a good contrast for his oil futures calls, so his portfolio made money overall despite RSX being halted and written off as zero. I feel bad for anyone who went big on the Russia dip as a standalone play back in early Feb though. It was getting shilled around and then just imploded the second Russia invaded.

The tankers play was oil tanker ships. Charter rates mooned for a short period as no one wanted delivery on there oil anymore so it was just sitting on ships piling up.
Ironically the container ships were what made all the profits from covid in the end, despite being the subsector that crashed the hardest in those first months.

I'm on the fence with homebuilders. Too much conflicting data. Maybe it pays out in a few years, but I just don't see it in the short term.

Everybody dunking on Kuppy for buying RSX as a hedge should ready to offer a respectful blowjob to him for buying OTM CL options hand over fist

I'm pretty sure Kuppy's CL futures tails option trades have been one of his most profitable of all time.

This is such an intriguing company. $3.80/share of current assets net total liabilities. Is this real?

ASTL just bought a quarter of company at 9.75. Meanwhile company trades at 9.20...from a technical point now post tender - when do the incremental new buyers step in here?

Kind of funny the way this one's working out. Going public to slowly go private.

Steel plate prices still very high despite soft HRC.

Picture related, they made 61 thousand nt of steel plate in the most recent Q with more coming when plate processing upgrades complete in Nov.

EBITDA on the plate alone is ~$100M per q at these prices. After completion of the tender, ASTL's market cap is down to $975M. It won't take much firming in the HRC price to send ASTL stock higher.

Bears are so fucking assblasted, it's honestly glorious. Yeah it should saliently impact CPI but also the calculations they use for rent prices are actually delayed. So inflation driven by rent will go up but energy inflation will tank hard

She broke down and said "I have a spending problem". This was following basically an affectionless decade. I said things were going to change, we are equals. Her response to that was being equal is a big change and it would take time. I moved out, we both agreed working on us would be less frustrating that way because I'd be pissed staying around her with little to no daily change. She played me for money for 2 years. Then I got diagnosed with a muscle wasting disease, force retired, income halved. At the income halved part is when she said she likes the new, strong, independent her. (I was giving her 7k cash a month at that point). So I filed. She now realizes how good she has it, and works as a teacher making 35k a year. (I made 320k). I owe no spousal support cause I found her messages to her sister wishing I'd hurry up and die so she would get the $2m life insurance (finding those messages was the week after my initial discovery and the reason I moved out).
My advice, if your marriage is crap and you're trying but she isn't, and you know it won't make it, get out early. Waiting makes the rape harder. Don't be the "Iade a commitment" guy I was when she clearly didn't see herself as having a part. Marry a nice and ugly one.

Open interest means contracts that are already written. It could be a bear spread, but that seems like a strange thing to do.

Me in this thread started out rooting for big oil. I was the architect for systems that run refineries. Not a position they want turnover in.
Her family doesn't like her either. Her mother talks to me now but not her. Apologized and told me she don't know where she went wrong. I didn't mention that she has a habit of banning people from our home. She had already banned everyone in her family several times through the years. If I didn't travel so much I probably wouldn't have made it very late ng in the marriage. Again anons, if she is a nice person that has morals - do that. Fuck looks,

>BTW we'll just write in no-fault divorce and write out fault divorce, teehee
It's as though men are livestock on a farm run by a female majority and literally evil politicians.

Dude, no shit. I mean sell-to-open. If you sell a call or a put, to open, that means it pops up on OI as "1"

Me turning over the finances was definitely the start. Seems she blew through cash faster than Hunter after I got sick.

Not saying who I worked for, but, umm mentioned 8k shares of a certain stock in my initial post I believe.

Perhaps. I wouldn't put much weight in current Moscow exchange pricing though.
Any recovery would require Putin gone, and could take years. In the meantime Russia could pull the plug at any time and just outright hijack foreign shares for zero compensation if relations worsen, or implement some oppressive foreigner tax.

Even if things normalize, there will be a wave of foreign selling suppressing the prices as soon as liquidity returns. It'll be a long grind back. Meanwhile, there's the opportunity cost of any money tied up in those shares. It may work out someday, but you won't change my view that it was a losing trade (as a standalone trade).

It's autoimmune, not genetic. Name is dermatomyositis. Hard to walk but the exhaustion is worse. There is nervous system involvement (chronic denervation but waaaaay too slow to be ALS) and cns issues are the worst. Went to John's Hopkins a few months back, returning soon to see a new specialist. As nasty as it sounded lots of people have it much worse.

XMR. Move everything you can into that and get the fuck out of the country. If you can put together a mil or so in XMR you'll get all the medical care you need, of good quality in a different country and you'll save yourself as much as possible from this trainwreck. Modern women are literally filth and every incel on here is right about them. Even if 75% are good it's still better to see them as worthless, terrible things until proven otherwise as governments will rape men who give everything to them the moment the woman fucks everything up and walks. I'm so glad I didn't get married to my last girl who turned out to be a fucking psycho and stories like yours vindicates men who only fuck hookers to fill and urge then lives life for themselves. I'm a little tilted for you sir.
