Since I first started observing birds in the my back yard a little less than a year ago and made a conscious effort to learn about them, one of the things that struck me was how divergent the female often is from the male.

I can remember for years seeing little brown birds "chase off" he red birds in my yard when I was watching them. I now realize...THIS IS THE FEMALE. Only the male robin is red.
Basically he fucks her and then she lays the eggs and then he tends the eggs while she builds another nest.
About the time those eggs hatches, she finishes and the male goes to work on her again.
Birds have short lives but can really churn out the offspring over the course of just a couple of years. It is quite the experience learning about nature and really observing it in peace.
