In a stock split issued as a dividend, you are given three more whole-ass candy bars for every candy bar you had already bought and still had by a certain date - in the case of gamestop, so long as you held shares on or before the 21st, you were to receive three more shares for every share you already held. Technically the date of record was the 18th but you could buy a share as late as the day before the dividend issuance and still receive the three dividend shares, and it would double-fuck shorts to have done so (like I did) because the only way you could buy a share during that time period was to buy it from someone creating fake shares through abusing the locate-to-borrow system and a myriad of other methods of criminal activity as everyone that wasn't actually fucking retarded was refusing to sell during that time.

If you're asking why the overall price per share went down during a stock split I will refrain from being mean because you might be legitimately retarded. If you're asking why taking into account the split issuance the price went down (it did, the day previous it was at 159 and some change so the post-split price should've been nearly 40$) then that would be shorts continuing to sell into lit exchanges to push NBBO down while buying in non-lit exchanges so they could cover customers positions and actually have their shares rather than just have a bigger number in the position column for their accounts. Mostly because leading up to and after the split a shitload of people are direct registering a shitload of shares (IIRC it was as many in about a week as it was in an entire fiscal quarter) and even for the positions that will never direct register and remove their shares from the DTCC, brokers - even and especially the largest ones - don't want to be fucked if/when (when) the price rips and get gaped having to pay out the difference to their clients.

If you're a broker you can literally just not buy shares for your clients when they tell you to, credit them with a position in their account, and just pay them the difference when they sell out of your own money. To the customer it's the same thing as if you'd actually bought the shares, and they still experience a net gain if it was profitable (and you experience a net gain if it wasn't, as their broker). But this also means a shitload of buying action doesn't actually do anything to affect the price of the underlying security. Hence why there's such a movement to direct register shares as it forces brokers to deliver them to the transfer agent to then remove from the DTCC so they can no longer be used and abused as locates to justify more shorting up to illegal naked shorting which absolutely still exists for a shitload of securities.
