I have two theories about that. One is that people genuinely think Tesla is going to dominate the future of automobiles the same way Apple has with phones. To them the Tesla run up of not making money has just mostly been about them getting situated and getting a foothold in the industry, they believe in Elon and Tesla. All Elon really did was buy them time, I think it was sort of clever. Then I think there's people who think it's bullshit but will just ride the hype wave anyways because there's a lot of supporters and true believers. Which always makes making money easy. This is why you don't get too emotional. On one side you're too pessimistic about the company and see it crashing any time, on the other you're too much of a goddamn believer and will probably ride it all the way down in the end, wasting so much time and effort.

Tesla is in the S&P 500. Snap is not. That's the difference. The ONLY difference.

Elon dumped his bags on the world, and they'll carry them proudly for the next 10 years. TSLA in 2040 will still be ~$1000 per share. It will have underperformed, but it will not lose investors money in USD terms. There will be no blowup. The demand dynamics for the S&P are too powerful for that. Too many boomers passively contributing, and zoomers will follow in time.

Look how long GE is taking to implode. When a company gets that big, it can only be walked down slowly. There's too much support. Too much money to be made just floating it steady and fucking over both the call and put buyers.

One of the biggest misunderstandings is the idea that a stock is a short because its overvalued. Telsa at a P/E of 100+ is obviously a terrible bet for long term returns, but that insane valuation also allows them to "grow" essentially for free. As long as they continue to expand, even if the expansions have terrible ROI or involve overpriced acquisitions, they'll support the price. Telsa is so overvalued that a mediocre acquisition immediately improves all their financial metrics. Literally all they had to do was buy bitcoin to pump this quarter, because it offered them improvements on the revenue metric at near zero cost. Expanding into lithium mining is another way to improve metrics. Even though the whole lithium mining sector is massively overvalued itself at present - they're less overvalued than Tesla and therefore its a positive.
Perhaps someday Tesla will just outright buy a coal miner or utility provider on the basis that it gives them a full vertical in EV ownership from power gen to charging to the car itself. Objectively, an outside investor would be better off owning the coal miner today, but the Tesla investors will still benefit from the reflexive gains of an overpriced company making a cheaper priced acquisition. It takes a very long time for this dynamic to fail.
