You can definitely tell which people are "developers turned hackers" or "hackers turned developers" and it's a common point of contention on projects teaching reverse engineers how to actually write portable maintainable code (they'll tend to make everything device/architecture-specific and hard-code values based on their setup). Some people specialize in crypto, some people specialize in networking, some people specialize in binary exploitation, etc. A good reverse engineer is a Jack of All Trades curious how everything works and knows a little bit about everything or knows where to learn more. It's common for reverse engineers to not even have computer degrees because schools don't teach it and you need the personality for it and the initiative to self-teach (you will encounter a lot of open-ended problems with no documentation).
