For background I have 50K cash
Strategy:
>bet $20 on red at the roulette table
if I win, it's todays food budget covered, all is good. Wait till next day
If I lose:

if I win, it's todays food budget covered, all is good. Wait till next day
If I lose:

I was trying OPs strategy. I would only bet on red after 4 blacks in a row, and then double down if I lost. I made a bit of money the first time I did it, but eventually lost it because of that streak of blacks.

This. It's the one reason that your strategy won't work, OP.
Further, you have to account for landing on greens, and also the fact that casino's pay out slightly worse odds than the chances of landing on your desired number. ie. Simply doubling your bet isn't enough, as you'd still lose money long-term even if you could double to infinity.

getting 15 red or 15 black in a row or any combination of both is just as likely :1/2 to the number of turns, any combination after ten rounds has a probaility 0.0009765625, or one in 1024 chances, but only one of the 1024 combination sinks anon, any other saves his skin, so yes>>50440912 the probability of red is the same as black on each round,
but aseries of ten reds has has a 1 in 1024 probability of happpenig vs 1023 out of 1024 for all other possible outcomes possible, which work for a martingale
this being said, I wouldn't be surprised roulette softwares have "martingale breakers" like randoms streaks of 12+ same color, and I'm not sure playing like that in a real casino would fly very long before security wants a word

There is also the small chance to get a 0 or 00 (green) so 2/38 (neither red nor black) with each spin. And yes, the software will definitely trigger some mechanism to stop accepting your bets at some point if they recognize such patterns.
