You need to keep the seed words and the ledger safe.

The issue with ledger is that integration with metamask has always been flaky at best. I prefer using the Tangem card. It's better because there are no seed words, only backup cards. The cards have a pin number so even if they are stolen, the funds cannot be accessed. You connect to DApps using wallet connect, which is supported by most major DApps.

If you have small amounts of funds, something like CNDL or some other microcap tokens like ATRI and DRC, just using metamask is great but once the price of CNDL goes up, you definitely need a hardware wallet. I hear it will be integrated with the Tangem wallet soon.

Yes it would. Your coins aren’t actually stored on the device they are still on the blockchain. The device just lets you access and move them. After getting a new device you can generate your old wallet onto the new device using your seed

Hardware wallets are tiny, airgapped computers that can be taken anywhere.

Tails is made for browsing the internet anonymously on random computers without leaving a trace. Completely different use cases. Installing OpenBSD without any networking software on an airgapped raspberry pi would be the most similar option to a hardware wallet.

If you have to ask that question, you are most certainly a retard that shouldn't own crypto.

>> No.50428622

>>50428276
No, not necessarily. You could even sign transactions on an airgapped computer, then transfer via USB and broadcast them on a connected machine. If you're using a desktop software wallet that would be prudent. But with a hardware wallet that is not necessary, that's the whole point, the signing happens on the actual device where the private key never leaves.

The main point of a hardware wallet is that it's basically the maximum security you can get while STILL being able to USE your wallet/accounts conveniently. Connect to dapps, sign transactions, etc.

If you just want to create an account for receiving funds and you don't care (yet) about signing anything, then you don't even need a computer at all. Just get some dice and the BIP wordlist and generate your own seed phrase. You can also derive your individual accounts and public addresses from it all offline by following the spec, if you really wanted to.

When you get a hardware wallet, it automatically generates a new seed phrase for you, that is used to derive all private keys / accounts for all coins. But you're not meant to JUST store the physical device. You also need to write down that seed phrase and store that SUPER SECURELY (can even split it up). Store the physical device securely too, but also within reach if you plan on actually signing msgs/txs.

The device is just a convenience wrapper for your seed phrase. As long as you have the SP backed up / stored properly, the only thing you lose if you lose the device is the ability to conveniently sign/transfer stuff.

this is a really good idea. it's tempting to talk about it to other people but it's much better to just keep it a secret for a lot of reasons. you do perhaps want a deadmans switch of sorts just in case you die to transfer it to someone you love but if you don't love anyone that isn't an issue.
