Think about where indexes may be without shorting (discounting the current recession). They borrow from people's 401k and other investment and retirement accounts and basically bet against them. What value does that provide? I'm open to having my mind changed by a convincing argument, but I'd tend to disagree.
The issue with naked short-selling isn't so much that extra shares flood into the marketplace, the issue is that there's no public transparency about it so you can never know how exactly how the price is being impacted by borrowed shares.
If I go and buy XYZ stock today, I have ZERO idea if the price is being impacted by 0, a million, a billion, or even a trillion excess borrowed shares. That's the real issue.
At best, assuming that shares short can't be hidden somehow, the best you have is FTD reports or short interest being updated long after the fact.
We have the technology to do this: there needs to be real-time transparency in the system. Any investor should know in real-time how many real and borrowed shares are in circulation.

I've heard this argument too, and I think it's terrible. A business is going to succeed or fail on its own, and its stock price is almost independent of how it's actually functioning in many cases. That's how you end up with insane IPO valuations, but all that aside, it's up to the individual investors to decide for themselves what they're willing to pay. That's the free market and it's the most fair playing field. If a company all of the sudden starts getting a ton of selling pressure (that's fake in a lot of cases like GME because of synthetic shares) it can harm their business no matter how healthy it was before that.

I'm fine with put options in order to hedge. Say you're long on a small cap pharma with one drug in their pipeline that's coming up for FDA review. You might buy puts just on the off chance it gets rejected so you aren't totally btfo.
