I never lived there but it's also possible (I've traveled there a shitload of times).
It's more than enough to get by, that's for sure. But your money would go much further in Cleveland (at least imo).
Ohio in general is a relatively cheap state to live in, so 85k is already higher than most folks living there.
Plus if I were you, with the money you're gonna be making I'd be buying up lots and lots of land. It's cheap to buy and I'm willing to be within 10 years or so, you'd have at the very least quadrupled your investment.
I was planning on doing this, but ended up moving to Tennessee. Had I done so, I would be retired by now.

lol hell yes. there's still a lot of cheap housing in the big rust belt cities in decent neighborhoods (Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Indianapolis, Louisville etc). You'd be fine in any of those with 50k.

West coasties are actually terrified of blacks and the cold. All of those cities are like 50% black minimum and get horrifically cold winters with ice, sleet, snow, freezing rain etc. from November to April. If you can tolerate both of those, the quality of life is pretty high and there's a lot of culture/services/cheap food and activities. For 50k in any of those places try 125k for Austin or Denver.
