My 401k is mostly Vanguard funds with low management fees but they do not say what the purchase fees are, other than noting that rebalancing incurs a purchase fee. It takes out a downtrend line from march and puts 420 in play, Earnings are also going to be terrible based on current estimates, all while economic data further deteriorates. Also the VIX is near channel bottom (VXN already is), and the 10 year is going to make a lower high around 3.1ish. Deep ITM options have a higher delta which is good if you want to eliminate uncertainty from volatility changes and you want to mitigate the effects of time decay. When you're outright shorting you effectively have a delta of 1 and if you're trying to replicate that experience with puts you want a delta as close to 1 as you can get. i don't think they can make it this far. the jobs report shows a gigantic divergence between the establishment and household surveys, which only happens in one or two different ways.
first, lots of tech companies are hiring offshore contractors. every operation that has proven it can do WFH effectively has also discovered that it can let go of its lazy american middle-managers, the devops people, the "architects" that don't write any code, and just focus on results: delivered by contractors from literally anywhere in the world. "home" is everywhere in the WFH world. this effect is similar in non-tech enterprises because HR and marketing/sales have similar managerial inefficiencies, and although there's less of it in general, these are not CAPEX like software solutions are. when you book all your hours as opex, but you don't really do shit, you are so, so easy to cut.
the second is the multiple-jobs phenomenon. this is probably the stronger of the two factors, but i really cannot say. americans are increasingly reporting that they have some kind of side hustle. even non-WFH operations have employees that are doing this kind of thing. the household survey headline number doesn't double-count, you're either employed or not. multiple jobholders is buried later in the report.
bottom line, the reality is the labor market is still falling apart. a single 75bps hike at the end of july is likely to show up in a much bigger way than expected, by the end of the year.
