Oil futures curve is currently trading at $70+ until mid 2026. This is the general threshold of profitability for the industry, though quality companies have lower break evens. In that timespan, even the worst run oil companies will outearn their current enterprise values. They could hedge now, but the curve will inevitably shift higher once the SPR releases end.

The companies I hold are already below 3x FCF and rapidly declining every day as they accumulate more profits. If you ignore the "free" aspect and just count based off current EV vs current invested production assuming no investments at all in further production, they're even cheaper.

It doesn't make much sense that oil companies have traded back to pre-invasion valuations, aside from the common psychological factors that typically cause corrections in outperforming sectors: the natural human desire for mean reversions and comparable relative performance.
Whatever though. Considering my holdings all have massive active buyback programs, I can't really complain. It's important to look at things objectively and rationally.
Note that tech companies do not have this same comfort. As tech values implode, their SBC dilution actually compounds. This is the risk of holding a profitless company.

SPR right now is providing more than 1% of daily barrels. That will end soon.

The crude builds are fake. As SPR drains at above historical rates, it takes time to shift those barrels where they need to be. This creates the appearance of inflated crude numbers on some weeks, but the reality is that it's necessary. In the same sense, some "storage" is also logically necessary in cushing, in refinery feedstocks, and in pipeline fill. For the continuous flow and processing to function, there are certain breakpoints where oil will always exist. If it didn't exist, the refinery would be forced to go offline, for example.
The point is, storage will never hit an absolute zero, and raw numbers can be deceptive.

The most important number to watch right now is the gas/diesel price and crack spreads. As long as those remain elevated, there is no substantial risk to crude pricing declining below the current range (approximately $100-110, ignoring temporary dislocations due to speculation).
Natural gas and coal are also relevant numbers to watch in the coming months. If there is a collapse in NG inventories in Europe, there will be some gas to oil switching done to prevent complete blackouts. At present, European NG is already at a stupidly high price - equivalent to paying $200/bbl for oil that would produce an equivalent amount of power.

There is no reason for oil to rebound significantly within the next 3-4 months. May was a speculative top and those traders have likely bailed due to economic fears. WTI is now back within the sweet spot.

Luckily, you're probably not speculating on oil futures directly. You should be holding stock in companies. Oil companies are generating monster cashflows at current prices. The bull case for companies is that they're trading well below expected cashflows over the next 3-4 years.

When Q2 earnings come around, I wouldn't be surprised if we hear of substantial hedging performed by some of the more risk averse oil companies. For many companies it'd be trivial to derisk the entire operation by hedging ~70% of production over the next several years, leaving the remainder as pure upside or a chance to grow further.
Ever since the Russian invasion, there's been an increasing divergence between oil E&P stock performance and expected future profits (as defined by actual futures pricing including backwardation along the whole curve). The tail end of the curve continues to rise. These companies can essentially turn themselves into a risk free bond that pays 5x the yield of current treasuries: An anti-ESG bond.
