My boomer parents managed to lose their house 20 years ago and never got back into the market and have been renting for 20 years and now they're in their late 60s.

How?

They bought their original home or $70k in 1985. They paid it off, but then in 1995 they decided to knock the house down, and rebuild a new fancy modern house (for the time). They took out a huge mortgage to do this. They only lasted 5 years before they were forced to sell as they kept falling behind on mortgage repayments.

My mom will never admit it, but I know for a fact she went way overboard with the build, way out of what they could afford, and then ended up being forced out for it.

If they just didn't do anything, kept the original house, they'd be laughing right now. Instead they're doomed to rentoiding for life.

My Great Grandfather worked hard and saved. T.B.H idk wtf happened to the money. My great grandmother is still alive and probably blew all of it.

My grandfather was incredibly intelligent, he was a traveling auditor and was a mathematics professor in the mid 60's. He married the daughter of a mafia guy. Idk how much money he has, but he works part time still just to get out of the house.

The Italian side of my family was also rich, but my Italian great grandmother and her husband blew all of it gambling in Vegas.

Neither of my parents went to college, neither of them have health insurance, life insurance, pensions or 401ks. They literally have collectively like $5k in cash savings. My dad still has $75k left on his mortgage and like $10k left on a van. My mom still owes like $10k on a car and doesn't even own a house. They made extremely stupid decisions their entire lives and I grew up half of my life in the ghetto and the other half of my life in the poor, rural midwest.

It is what it is. I bust my ass and hopefully one day if I have kids, they won't have to live a life like mine or my parents.
