This is absolutely completely false. I don't know about the recession in the 80s or great recession as I wasn't there. But during the dotcom bubble there was an actual sentiment of the internet not panning out even though it clearly had real world usage by then. I made money with Netscape stocks which I flipped into Yahoo (which I then sold at a large loss, even though it eventually recovered). The sentiment was that none of the websites would ever become solvent and that ROI is going to be negative because the demand is simply not there, this was a correct assessment. Google wasn't even a thing during the dotcom bubble (I see a lot of Gen Z claim Google survived the dotcom bubble when it wasn't even a part of it). Out of the surviving companies only 2 ever went higher than during the dotcom bubble. Amazon and Yahoo. Yahoo eventually went down the drains again but Amazon survived. There were hundreds of popular stocks including social media companies, untold amount of storefronts, Services and even digital currencies. None of them fucking survived.

Japan also never recovered from the Asian Financial Crisis and the "Lost Decade" has turned into 3 decades by now.
