They are just like regular stocks, mostly. Their nature is quite different but it shouldnt matter at this point.
What you need to know is that the index itself is a model compiled by a financial service company (best example is standard & poors) and they sell/concede the index (ex: SP500, Russel 2000, etc) to other companies who actually manage the funds. These companies offer several products which can be condominium funds or exchange-traded funds. The former is the traditional style of index funds and more decentralized, but the latter is much more popular due to superior liquidity.
You should probably be looking into the etfs that are avaliable in your region. Most countries have an SPX/SPY equivalent. The main difference between indexes of the same class is the size of the share and whether they distribute the earning to your account or immediately invest back onto itself. Accumulating funds tend to be better for most scenarios due to tax concerns. Shift to distributing if you want to live off passive income, though.
If you dont want to think, just go with any SP500 US indexed fund. Its the safest bet there is, but, as with any stock investment, returns are not guaranteed. Go with bonds if you only want to protect yourself against inflation while not facing any risk.

You need to just bee urself and pick out a good stock.

I mean it. There is no trick. You need to look at a chart and ask yourself if this looks good. You need to look at financials and ask yourself if they look good. You need to look at what the company does and ask yourself if you would ever use their products or services.

One "no" isn't a deal breaker but if you answer no to all of these then maybe the stock is just shit?

because you're stockpicking, and stockpicking is hard. look, if your intention is to buy something and just hold it for a really long time (not caring if it's up 10% one day or down 20% the next) then you should look into something called mutual funds, basically a basket of stocks that's professionally managed on your behalf, typically used to follow an index (just a big list of 500 compies for example). you don't need a lot of money to get in on this either

but yeah, look at pic related. you're setting yourself up for failure trying to find and time that one unicorn. and i say "time" because timing the market is hard, a lot of people don't realize this but you have to time not just when you get in, but also when you out

why play the game when u can buy the game

Yes. You cant trade indexes directly. You want a fund that follows said index (S&P500). The biggest name in the market are the rothschilds, with blackstone. if your ETF crabs at a fixed value (e.g. 1000$, 900$, 1000$, 900$, etc), it'll go down x% and go up (1 - x)(1 + y) = 1 <=> y = 1/(1/x - 1)% for x in (0, 1), where y > x. i.e. for stable crabbing, the upside is larger than the downside.
OTOH, with an inverse ETF, you'll eat the upside as the downside and the downside as the upside, so while your ETF crabs at e.g. -10%, +11.11%, -10%, ..., your inverse ETF crabs downwards at +10%, -11.11%, +10%, ....
hence, inverse ETFs are more strongly affected by volatility on the underlying than regular ETFs, and by extension bear LETFs do even worse in volatility than bull LETFs.

in other words, while the 1x moves (1 - x)(1 + 1/(1/x - 1)) = 1 + y <=> y = 0:
- the -1x moves (1 + x)(1 - 1/(1/x - 1)) = 1 + y <=> y = -2x^2/(1 - x)
- the 3x moves (1 - 3x)(1 + 3/(1/x - 1)) = 1 + y <=> y = -6x^2/(1 - x)
- and the -3x moves (1 + 3x)(1 - 3/(1/x - 1)) = 1 + y <=> y = -12x^2/(1 - x).
so 3x volatility decay is 3 times worse than -1x volatility decay, while -3x volatility decay is 6 times worse than -1x volatility decay and 2 times worse than 3x volatility decay.

see pic related for a simulation. it only gets worse with more violent swings - at 20%, the bear 3x LETF goes to zero in 27 iterations, while the bull 3x LETF goes to zero in 65 iterations.
here's some homework for you: compare this with a leveraged short position that isn't being rebalanced on daily basis.

This assumes many things though:
- It's nowhere near that bad if the moves aren't that fast (10% a day? lol)
- If we crab upward or downward, it doesn't work like that (e.g. 10% up 10% down instead of 11.11% up 10% down)
- Leveraged ETFs do NOT go to 0, they reverse split and keep going down indefinitely, except if a single-day move is over 33.33...% down or up in the wrong direction.
- Volatility decay is not real. What you described is compounding. Volatility decay is the meme that the stock magically goes down even if the market goes in the right direction with no crabbing because... IT JUST DOES OK?

>> No.49779240

Yeah commercial real estate is fucked. If you drive around the suburbs in commercial districts there are for sale signs everywhere. Most of these companies are loaded up to the neck in debt too. That means not only will their income/occupancy decrease, along with how much they get from depositions but their cash flow will suffer due to increasing interest expense. I exited all of my commercially exposed REITs in anticipation of that and it's looking like a great decision as most are down 10-20% from that point.

I always like keeping REITs in my portfolio as they're easy to value and provide consistent cash flow, normally at tax efficient rates, but I see little upside in any currently. If we do go into a recession none of them will be safe.

>It's nowhere near that bad if the moves aren't that fast
it's still bad enough in practice that the end of march pump negated all SOXS gains up to that point. there's a reason why 2x LETF leverage tends to perform better in backtests than 3x leverage, and the -3x decay is sufficiently bad that holding SOXS through a volatile bleed alone may be a bad idea. you should be fully prepared to swing on the pumps, and when you're doing that already, i don't see why you wouldn't just enter a regular leveraged short position and rebalance manually every once in a while, or at least use less leverage.

>If we crab upward or downward, it doesn't work like that (e.g. 10% up 10% down instead of 11.11% up 10% down)
in a 10% up, 10% down scenario, your inverse etf will simply bleed out at the same pace as the underlying while a regular short position will net you returns. and if you're using 3x leverage, your 3x bear LETF will ironically also bleed out much quicker than the stock itself.

>Leveraged ETFs do NOT go to 0

Are you retarded? Did you actually try it before spouting this retardation? It's because 3x get btfo during turbo crashes, that's literally the only reason. If you use any period that does not span a turbo crash (but DOES span minor crashes), the 3x leveraged ETFs win out so hard it's unreal.

>Did you actually try it before spouting this retardation?
yes, and there are plenty of other people who have performed the same backtests to check whether LETFs are viable for long-term buy-and-hold. here's one paper to get you started: https://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=1664823

>If you use any period that does not span a turbo crash (but DOES span minor crashes), the 3x leveraged ETFs win out so hard it's unreal.
ah right i'll just backtest the 2008-2022 bullrun next time. should've known to simply ignore bad data and only include good data, my bad.

>Compounding attrition has nothing to do whatsoever with why the march pump killed soxs.
