Buying new is fine if you finance at an extremely low rate (less than 1% is fine). The depreciation you suffer in that case is offset by the capital opportunity cost.

Otherwise it's better to buy something that is used but still within warranty.

If you can’t get a decent reliable used car under $10k, then yes any Toyota is a good choice. I’ve always owned corollas, they’re very reliable if you take care of them. That thing will last you 20-30 years, just be sure to follow the maintenance manual. Oil change every 10k miles, CVT fluid/coolant every 80k miles or 10 years. Learn how to do some simple shit yourself like replacing the battery or air filters. Dealerships will rip you off for those relatively simple jobs.

This is also a good choice, but only financially worth it if you do a lot of driving. Prii regularly make it to 250-300k miles, but after about 15 years you might need to replace its hybrid battery. So if you drive more than 10k miles a year it’s probably worth it.

Don't listen this this retard. You will not find those deals anymore. Chip shortage, car makers selling every car they make, increase cost for automakers and increasing rates. Those 1% deals were possible during the pandemic when everyone was caged or 4 years ago, not today.

If you are buying Toyota but new, these people will have a 200k Corolla from 15 years ago and will try to sell it for 15k when you can get one new for 21.

If you are looking for a vehicle for pure utility, I'd suggest Hyundai OP. They are the new Honda (best bang for your buck vehicles, since Honda has upped their prices). See if you can find a dealership with new 2022 Elantras just as the 2023 Elantras begin rolling out and you can probably get a discount.

I bought a 2020 Kona just as the 2021's were rolling out and got it for 20k OTD (second level, AWD). Going to the website and pricing the current year Kona with that configuration is just under $26k MSRP (the chip shortage and inflation is nuts). I remember when I was at the dealership there were other people buying Elantras at about the $15k OTD price range.

Cause the parents of GenZ think of a 200k corolla as THE starter car for their zoom zoom new drivers. Can’t buy american or they won’t trust it not to stall on the freeway and leave Bryler or Kaiytlyn stranded. Can’t buy new cause the kid is gonna trash the car and then they’ll feel upset about it. Can’t buy anything bigger cause gas mileage. Can’t buy anything sportier cause the kid will wrap it around a telephone pole.
So it HAS to be a Corolla/Civic and it HAS to be 10 years old with 200k miles.
