That’s an issue I’ve had. I like all the smaller shit as it’s interesting heritage on some of the coins. Plus they tend to be cheap so you can grab 1 or 2 things to flesh out a collection. Pic related, an unidentifiable red mineral, growing in proximity to cosalite, pyrite, possible gold and arsenopyrite.

Matrix is quartz, found on a well mineralized contact zone associated with gold associated with the above minerals. As far as i can tell, hardness of 7-8, semi translucent, I cant tell yet what the shape of the crystal is, i am looking through i micro lens right now. More pics in a bit, i have a bunch of samples being worked on in acid to remove iron oxide.

I am not a gem expert, i ve never seen this mineral before.

I initially thought beryl because of its shape, or garnet because you say its red; however, upon opening my DK rocks and minerals field guide, I was immediately met with tourmaline. Cassiterite seems plausable too. the amphibole riebecktite looks like the same shape of crystals. or I guess pyroxenes. hopefully that helps?

its got to be something really odd, its around other odd minerals like cosalite, growing in both thin platy sheets along fractures in the quartz host and as full scale crystals. I ll have to mail a sample off to the gem heads in Victoria to ID, because this stuff is neat and there is a whole lot of it laying around where this came from.
