I want to start a business.
I will make custom furniture.
What brand of power tools should I invest in?

Milwaukee. I work in the field of transportation and distribution (I watch fuck heads lay water mains for the city all day) and everything we have is Milwaukee. Their FUEL line handles a stupid amount of abuse. Impact wrenches get submerged in mud routinely and still work.

If you have to ask this question, you have no business making custom furniture. That said, Milwaukee, Bosch, Festool in that order. Avoid crap like Ryobi, Craftsman, other cheap brands, you get what you pay for with power tools.

Why not start with something smaller? Benchtop wood lathe for pens or something

Most of the well-known brands like Milwaukee Bosch Dewalt etc are adequate, purely because when it comes to tools, the most reliable brands are the ones that become well-known in the first place. It's not like fashion brands where you pay an extra 0 for the same cloth because of the label, cheap brand power tools are poorly made, unreliable and will break quickly.
