Because they live in the city and it became trendy. I was born in the Netherlands, people there are weird. I remember when my neighbors were moving they were saying their good byes like we'd never see each other again because they were moving so far. They were only going 30 minutes down the road. The common joke the American city I live in now is ironically "everything is 30 minutes away" because the city is spread out over a large area with a circular highway network separated by a river. It's comical how squished together Europeans are.

>put all the crazy bums and tweakers in an asylum
>put affordable housing within <30 min. of my workplace that isn't the size of a walk-in closet and requires me to share a bathroom, a kitchen, and a washing machine with an entire building
Until then, I require a car for commuting.

Germanon here; bicycling is great. We built our entire infrastructure around it.
Anywhere you can go with a car, you can go with a bike.
I have a dozen bike paths by my village that connect me to a larger city center about 25 mins away.
I can take my bicycle on the public transportation.
I can go anywhere with a bicycle. Its great.
Plus, its good exercise, and americans are allergic to exercise.

yeah this is a major issue with bicycles
i've heavily researched locks and there just isn't one you can buy that will resist a determined thief with a grinder/bolt cutters. this massive issue is a large part of why bicycles aren't as widespread as they could be. people want a nice bicycle but they don't want it stolen so they leave it at home. a lot of commuters will then buy a shitty cheap bike just to not have to worry as much, but those just aren't as pleasant to ride they're often heavy. with an electric bike i think you for sure want a removable battery you can put in a backpack since the battery is the most expensive part probably. but yeah it's a major issue and not many solutions. maybe hide a gps tracker in there somewhere but thats a monthly fee and a whole thing

folding bicycles can be pretty sweet if you're worried about theft, carry it right into the store. smaller wheels good for urban environment quicker acceleration for frequent start and stops at intersections. not going to get the long distance advantage of larger wheels though. sometimes a walmart employee or whatever will ask me to put my bike in a shopping cart no biggie usually nobody cares when i walk it in somewhere folded up. that's one way to deter bike theft carry your bike. maybe i should get a folding electric but i assume they're all very heavy or short ranged especially with those smaller wheels.

and another thing, level two charging stations and electric motorcycles rarely mix and only then in a couple very expensive motorcycles like the zero. dc charging stations seem few and far between but the electric harleys use those and its even faster then level two but i can only find one such station accessible in southern ontario. also i can't afford these bikes anyways. so close and yet so far, the technological potential is there, but the demand isn't i guess to support more options.

but those electric scooters can be very cheap, the ones that are speed limited but no insurance, but charging is 3-4 hours. if they could bring down that charge time with the same kind of technology the zero motorcycle uses (maybe have to increase battery size to make it possible in the scooter increasing cost) while still making it cheap. that would be pretty handy if you could charge it at locations all over the city 20 minutes to 80% capacity or whatever. you might say whats the point but sometimes getting all the way to where you are going and back runs the battery dead and now you can't go anywhere for 4 hours its kind of limiting. it's not like i can ride across the gta and back without stopping somewhere for 4 hours bleh. if i had a faster electric motorbike it would be an even bigger problem. electric motorcycles aren't going mainstream until the charging situation is made smooth like it is with the cars now.

I’m just saying that bikes can be more inconvenient than cars sometimes, and are ALWAYS more inconvenient for work related travel. I dont feel like sweating or worrying about locking my bike somewhere safe or being ran over by every car on the road when I want to get groceries or drive to work. I’ve previously enjoyed biking a lot in large cities that accommodate it and have the open lanes necessary for them to work, but bicycles are still borderline unusable if there’s a single car on the road. It’s not the days of yore where little Timmy can bike around making money being the paper boy each morning, today little Timmy would get ran the fuck over and have his brains splattered by a gargantuan Chevy truck that never even saw him from its 8 foot tall frame.

i totally agree but i wouldn't want the government doing anything about. that road just leads to a landslide of regulations and bullshit that just makes things worse as the bureaucrats scramble to gain more power to satisfy their lust to micromanage other peoples lives. the price of gas is the price of gas we can't have the government deciding that different people pay different prices that wont end at gas. thats the issue, the horrible impracticality of your big government solutions.

Also have you ever wondered why cycles go on the sidewalk ? Do you think it's only for the PURE pleasure of kicking elder's asses ?
It's because the cycle roadline magically disappear out of nowhere and cars can't ever let you pass on the road you're supposed to ride. I swear if I could get a dollar everytime a car cross the cycle road line I'd be a millionaire in a week. Everyday when I'm doing my iron man training the road is full of fat fucks crossing line and I have to go on the sidewalk.
I swear driver cucks are the lowest iq available

ok fine them small amounts for petty crimes whatever. i'm talking about how you can't have different people paying different prices, the fungibility of the dollar must be absolute, it's a pillar of the economy. governments decide to start charging some people more and some people less it's all going to go to shit they can't help themselves, you let them start doing that and they'll fuck everything up. and the cbdcs are the technology that could let them do it, so don't give them any ideas. or pretty soon you'll be paying a chud tax on gas for not flying a rainbow flag on your taxi or something.

Liberals can't think past their living space. They think life is a video game with food just spawning in stores out of nowhere. I have yet to meet a leftist who can comprehend how batteries will never be able to power tractors and farming equipment in general, let alone ships that need to deliver all their avocados for their vegan diet. It isn't a case of "we will find out a way eventually". It is a case of "it is physically impossible to store energy in enough density by way of electrical charge". Some facts won't change no matter how much we advance in technology. We will also never break the speed of light.

Stop trying to find excuses. I can't count the number of times I see bicycles out of their lane for no reason other than to slow down the traffic. They also stay right in the middle of the bus line so they can be assholes and block the taxis and the buses for their own sadistic pleasure. Go remove the saddle of your bike and impale your iron butt on the metal bar if you want to be an asshole.

Kek, I'm rich as fuck and live in a major european city - cycling is by far the nicest way to get around. Driving takes twice as long, and public transport is for poor people.

Cycling will always be the high IQ way to get around.

In the US town layout is just so different that it's perhaps not practical. Many parts of Europe have compact cities on very old layouts and you can get around very quickly by bike.
