Five years after the fact, my boss told me she only hired me because I wasn't a threat to her job. The guy that should have gotten the job was too good and she said "he'll probably try to take my job". Do with this information whatever you choose.

Either go for the second in command position, or get hired for a completely unique role. Where I work, I'm the only person in the entire department that does what I do. My upwards trajectory wouldn't infringe on any bosses or superiors unless I literally wanted to become President of the company.
