Had that exact scripted convo at least 5 times while job hunting. One place like that made an offer way under where I had another offer. When I told them they told me “no way will we be able to go that high”. Came back the next day with an equal offer (50% higher than where they started btw) and a signing bonus. I still didn’t take it.
