A split makes more shares midwit. The price drops appropriately. It's so poor people can buy more shares now and the price will continue going up.

However it's not really as effective a method as it used to be. People can buy fractional shares now more commonly because crypto made the idea of fractional investment popular.

HOW DO I BUY STOCKS

>> No.49402834

Don’t panic when you see the first trade in Amazon AMZN –34.07% . com shares on Monday.

Back in March, Amazon (ticker: AMZN) announced a 20-for-1 stock split, which is now being implemented. With the start of the new trading week, each Amazon share becomes 20 shares. The stock, which on Friday dropped 2.5% to $2,447, should open Monday with a price of about $122. Amazon’s share count will jump from 509 million to 10.2 billion.

To be clear, this isn’t a case of getting something for nothing. It’s comparable to exchanging a $20 bill for 20 singles.

But the split could provide some benefit to the stock. For one thing, it makes the shares more accessible to small investors. Also, as Barron’s has noted before, the split opens the door to potential inclusion of Amazon shares in the Dow Jones Industrial AverageDJIA –1.05% . Adding high-price shares to the Dow is problematic because the index is weighted according to price, so the same percentage change in a high-price stock moves the index more than for a low-price one.

This is the fourth time Amazon has declared a stock split since it went public in 1997, but the first in more than two decades. The other three splits were all within 15 months in the heart of the internet bubble period: 2-for-1 in June 1998, 3-for-1 in January 1999, and 2-for-1 in September 1999.

Google’s parent, Alphabet GOOGL –2.62% ( GOOGL ) has declared a 20-for-1 split as well, That one takes effect in mid-July. Tesla (TSLA) and GameStop (GME) have indicated plans for splits, but have provided no detail on the ratios or timing. Apple (AAPL) completed a 4-for-1 split in 2020.

Nah, again, you gotta understand the difference in mindset between stock normies and crypto normies.

Stock normies are generally more "well adjusted adults" saving for retirement and want to know their investments in a company more thoroughly. They tend to do more research and base their buying and selling on profitability of a company and all that researching jazz they normally do.

They'll be fine with buying this "dip" and buying a year from now. Most normies are told that stocks are something you put money into, especially bluechips, and just hold for years or decades.

Anyone that owned 1 share before worth 2400$ now has 20 shares worth 120$ each for a total of 2400$, in other words nothing changed for them.
The point of split is to make it easier for new buyers to jump in since dropping say 600$ for 5 shares is much more affordable for average joe than dropping two and half grand on a single share.

You don't actually own fractional shares or have voting rights with them, your broker owns the whole share and has on their records that you and alice and bob each own part of it. It's the stock market version of "not your keys, not your coins"

Asking for the July Alphabet split. Currently I'm 95% in the red, although I have more amazon stock. But to get my average buying price down is gonna be a pain.

My question is will this stock split actually be beneficial for Amazon in the long run, or will this backfire and they continuously keep losing money because of MANY factors happening(unions, less people buying products, prime subscription numbers dwindling, warehouses disappearing, racial audits, etc.) this year alone?

Anyway very interesting times ahead.

The agenda is liquidity. makes whole shares easier to acquire and will harvest more gains from smaller rebalancing portfolios that cut off exposure at a specific %

say you have a $100k portfolio with a 1% allocation to AMZN. works for your millionaires, but your small fries (low 6 figs) don't get exposure. with a lower share price, small fries get exposure to AMZN thereby boosting its overall marketcap.
