Technically option buyers can ride out a storm by rolling their options forward, preferably well before expiration. Although it costs a debit.
Anyways the way I see buyers:

Buying otm <21 dte and hoping for a large unexpected move to get a 10x or more. Low probability but great risk reward.

ATM or ITM options to simulate longing or shorting 50-100 shares. ITM options offer a form of leverage because it's like having 100 shares for a fraction of the cost, especially close to expiration where it's almost all intrinsic value. As an example 0 dte SPY 80 delta calls let me simulate 80 shares for around 300 dollars rather than 30 something thousand.
There's also longer term traders buying LEAPs, and because it costs less than shares they have a better ability to average down on dips.
Having more deltas is higher probability but higher risk.

If you're good at nailing direction you'd be better off buying options.
I prefer selling puts on stocks that have good premium but are in my opinion not as risky as the market is making them out to be. I make sure 100 shares is a fraction of my account size so if I get assigned I can sell more puts on the way down to average down and have a better chance to exit rather than get stuck at the top.
I mention that because normie NPCs immediately default to

And they also seem to fail to grasp that you can get an outsized return by *gasp* doing riskier stocks than the average ones. They're convinced wheeling underperforms which is only true if you go all in on a boring low premium ticker like SPY.
Lastly if you have a bit of intuition you can get a good feeling on when a stock or sector is not done dumping and when it is, to know whether to stay out or get in. Or gauge a dump by the previous lows on the daily or weekly chart. If you get some sense of value you can wait for it to dump to your target price then get in when IV is high but the bear trend has exhausted itself and there's no further downside. Obviously if you're correct this enhances your return rather than getting in too soon. And you don't have to "nail it" like it's going to Y price before X date, just "I don't think it's dumping anymore".

I recently quit cold turkey for a month. This past 2 weeks I’m at about 3/4 of a pint of liquor again. God I hate this shit. I don’t have hangovers or anything, but I’m very disappointed with myself. Going to try and start over today.

I don’t want the beer either. I’ve been an alcoholic for 18 years. I don’t day drink. I always make it to work and take care of my family. But it’s a waste of time and money. I was much more productive that month and starting to think more clearly. I was actually proud of myself for once.
I’m not anti drinking. It’s fun. It’s interesting. But I’ve tasted them all. I’m over it. I wish I could just have a nice drink at the end of the day, but it always turns in to 5 or 6.

Yeah I can't drink liquor because I'll drink it at the same speed I drink beer and fucking black out and vomit. I'm the opposite of those people who can just cradle one drink and sip it all night, it's almost a nervous tic that I have to constantly be sipping something, like at work I drink gallons of water per day and pee every 30 min because I'm always sipping from my giant water bottle as I talk to people (I have autism, ADHD, and anxiety and just sitting still and holding eye contact while talking to people makes me physically uncomfortable; I have to have some "outlet" for my nervous energy to fidget with).

You're exactly the same as me. I only have one speed which is binge drinking chugging. If I buy a 15 pack of beer I'll usually burn through it in 2 - 2.5 hours and be in bed. I'm not capable of sipping casually. I'm incapable of day drinking for this reason.

So Ive been DCAing into VOO for the past 5 years and now have about 240k worth portfolio. Yesterday I recieved 320k cash. What do I do? I don't plan on buying a house for another 4-5 years, so I'm putting aside 20k for a downpayment and planning to add 1k/month to it. That'll give me an 80k downpayment when the time comes which should be fine. For the remaining 300k that I want to invest, should I just lump it all in now? DCA over a year? I was thinking of:
>Invest 180k into VOO on Monday using a limit order
>DCA 10k/month into VOO over the next year.

That way if we keep dipping, I'll be able to keep capturing it, but also if we keep going up from now, I'll have still bought in with a big chunk at the dip. I'm not a fan of losing out to inflation, but a 300k purchase of stock in one day is a bit unnerving for me. Help me, Anon, you're my only hope.
