I work for a management consulting firm, but it's not a top tier one. I make 180K+15% bonus, but I have 7 YOE doing what I do in different organizations both public and private industry. You bring in consultants when your organization has no clue what it's doing or needs an external opinion to either validate or change how people are thinking about things. Sometimes the value is just having a third-party force your organization to make a decision. At the top level, it absolutely is all about relationships (i.e., CXO knows the consulting partner), but the meme about consultants being any more useless than any other person in the organization - on average - is incorrect in my experience. Consultants come in and get paid for specific tasks they must accomplish. In that sense they are often more 'productive' (as far as that fixed success criteria) than a regular employee because the regular employee just sits around and collects their paycheck and complains about things. The consultant might be there for 3 months and has to deliver SOMETHING which is better than nothing that most employees produce in 3 months. As far as inexperienced hires like this girl - that's part of the model. The real experts (the partner/managing directors) sell the work. Then to increase profits, they staff the absolute minimum possible resources ($50/hr+) with the absolute highest possible rates ($300/hr+). That's just the business model.

consultants arent typically hired to be technical folks. you dont hire a consulting firm to bring you software engineers. that's what staffing firms do. management consultants in particular are typically brought in do... surprise, management tasks including strategy (which is literally just answering the question of 'what do we need to do', not 'how do we do it'). the execution is usually other people's problem. if your experience with 'consultants' is some random dude in nigeria that was a developer - that's not a consultant in the sense most people talk about them. that's just a guy you hired a company to bring in that probably paid him $7/hr
