>Job hopping provides greater returns for compensation increase and external promotions. Why do companies get upset by it when they refuse to promote?

It just doesn’t make any sense.

>you're in control of your own career, goy
>raises and promotions won't be HANDED OUT
>they must be SOUGHT OUT and EARNED
okay i learned a lot these past 3 years and i'm ready to be promoted. oh wait it looks like stacey got the promotion and raise instead of me. guess i'll maximize my income and professional growth by finding a promotion elsewhere, rather than wait another 2 years for a similar management opening in the company. (although i'll likely be out-competed by another woman or minority hire.)

Prisoner's dilemma. Every boomer wants to be the *one* genius in the market who hacks the hiring process by pigeon-holing staff and simply poaching higher-level employees after some other schmuck has trained them for that level of responsibility (instead of eating the cost of training such people themselves). They're indignant to discover that the other prisoner has a functioning brain and can snitch too because it ruins the play they were trying to make. But they keep trying anyway, because boomers are equal parts greedy and stupid.

at my last job my boss sucked my dick and gave me max performance reviews for absolutely killing it and taking on additional responsibilities while my coworker was on medical leave.

i got a 3% raise and was denied a promotion because of """"HR red tape."""" i quit for a 30% raise, a promotion, and fully remote work a couple months later. my boss was absolutely shocked. her boss was so mad that he wouldn't even wish me well.

1) bad data
2) inflation

Survivor bias maybe. A lot of people who get paid well switched jobs a lot. But they switched jobs a lot because they're probably psychopaths and lie about shit. So they're also more likely to get fired then have to lie to the next company.

Also cost of living will go up faster than boomer companies will give you a pay raise. But companies need to be competitive when hiring` new ppl

Hard disagree, if the only way to move up is your boss quitting/retiring that could take 5 years on average.

At that point you stayed way too fucking long and it looks bad.

2-4 is the sweet spot.

in 2021 i applied for promotion at my job but was denied in favor of a new hire with no education and minimal experience. you can guess the race of the promoted individual. i said ok that's unfortunate and went home. they continuously texted/emailed/called me for about 2 months afterwards before finally sending me a 'termination' lmao. had new employment within a week of walking out with ~15% pay increase. i regret not keeping the text messages a lot of them were from my boss asking me to return but some were 'group' messages i was apparently in with the diversity hire promoted guy with him in a state of total confusion of how to manage the project.

kek. when i worked as an auditor one of our clients hired this incompetent nigger as an accounting manager. he knew nothing. he lasted 2 years before failing upward into an even higher ranking role at another company (corporate controller) and then leaving for another corporate controller role 2 years later, i assume because he was incompetent.

That happened to me at a summer job. Told them I had to quit in August to go back to school and the manager was livid that I wouldn't just drop out to keep making beer money.
