did you generate the key on your online comuter?

As in going to MEW and creating a new wallet on a computer that was online at the time or since? If so, it's entirely possible you got hacked or malware grabbed your key in between the time you created your homemade code (which isn't a good idea because humans are terrible at randomness) and the time you deleted the actual private key.

>> No.4621641

>>4621609

No, I don't mean you taking a screensot. Malware can take screenshots of your private key. Your private key should NEVER be displayed on your screen.

The safe way is to either generate the private key on an offline computer that will never be online again or use a hardware wallet.

This is an exchange guys - Etherdelta. It didn't steal your funds, the guy who stole your funds forwarded them through the exchange for additional anonymity. It happened to me as well. The flow chart is the following:

1. Takes your funds from your account and sends them to a temporary intermediary account
2. Sends the funds from the intermediary to the Etherdelta smart contract (the exchange on this webpage)
3. Withdraws them later to another account
4. And from here either this last account is the final one that he/she uses, or he/she keeps sending them around and around until he/she is satisfied with his/her safety.

Be careful in the future, NEVER share your private key. Also, preferably, don't copy it to your clipboard or anywhere because there are scripts that can retrieve info from your clipboard (javascript). Write it out by hand, keep it on a USB or paper and try not to store it on your computer if you are connected to the internet. Good luck.

You don't have to sync anything idiot.
You create a wallet on the offline PC, it generates an address and a private key for you from the pool of 5000 quadrillion possible addresses.
Then you go on an exchange on your other PC where you buy your shit and then you send everything to the address you had generated on the offline PC even though the computer that generated it was never connected. That is cold storage.
When you create a wallet you don't actually "create" anything, you basically, in layman's terms, pick a random wallet from the pool of possible wallets.

The only way that is happening is if you are dumb enough to leave money in your ED wallet and then you are also dumb enough to go click on a bad link that pulls your private key from your cookies. It doesn't just happen magically.

Which is why I said to make a new wallet every time, and empty it when you are done. It will prevent retards from losing money by clicking a bad link.

No, ledger isn't going to make ED safer. Ledger makes MEW very safe though.

If you want to use ED, do NOT import any wallet into it. This is how people get screwed. Just use the default wallet they give you, make your trades, then transfer all funds to your MEW which your Ledger controls. Once they are in there, they are safe.

If you wan't to use ED again, just tell it to make you a fresh wallet, send your ETH, make your trades, then send it to your Ledger controlled MEW.

It's not even possible to import a ledger wallet into delta anyway since for delta to function it needs to know your private key.
BUT if you use the same wallet everytime, andsomeone runs a script or a smartcontract on your wallet to instantly send all funds that arrive on it to his wallet, then you've got a problem. For that reason it is better to create a new wallet everytime. It's only a click anyway.

Because the default is only going to be used for the time it takes you to make your trades, and then you empty it.

When you request a new wallet from ED, it generates a private key that has never been used before and has never been seen by any person or computer before (no different than telling MEW to make you a new wallet). The only way someone is going to get this key is if you do something dumb. What's inside the wallet you imported? Does it contain coins that you don't plan on trading at the moment? If so, it's a dumb idea to import it into ED when you could just send the coins you want to trade to your ED wallet for a few cents fee. What happens when you close ED and accidentally click on a link a few days later that steals your ED cookies which contain the private key to the wallet you imported?

If you are importing a wallet that ONLY contains the tokens you are about to trade, and you are going to ABANDON that wallet when you are done trading, then importing is fine.

Well sure. By that logic anything is "fine".

But it's not how ED portrays itself; they don't say you have to or even should use all those precautions, even though their shit is EXTREMELY unsafe to use without them.
Therefore ED is a borderline scam.

I'm sorry for your loss man. But sounds like your luck isn't that bad if you have a mrs and a job that pays $3200 per month. Try and be positive although I would be pissed off if someone stole my coins too

If I was a whale I would throw you some LINK. I have learned from this mistake just as you have, so thanks for that m8.

So have we concluded that Etherdelta is responsible? Because you imported your wallet details into ED?

Why is ED so sketchy? Is it ED themselves stealing the coins? How did this person manage to get your private key via ED?

ED stores the private key of the wallet in your browsers cookies. That way you can reboot your computer and still have access to your wallet on ED.

Someone lifted OPs cookies.

To prevent this, have your browser clear your cookies when you close it. But know that your wallet will vanish if you close your browser without noting the private key first.

wrong. when ur an ausfag you gotta conform to their stifling PC social pressures and refer to your significant other as your "partner" which leaves people you have just met totally fumbling awkwardly in the dark as to what the implications of that statement must really mean. the social awkwardness can be taken to heightened level if the ask what their name is and you simply answer pat rather than Patric or Patricia. great excitement i say!

I mean think of it this way. If Etherdelta was truly compromised then more than 37 ETH would be stolen. It'd be national news about some banditos making out with millions in ETH. Since that is not the case, then the most likely thing is you're victim of some sort of social engineering.

>phishing
>XSS exploit
>keylogging virus

You should explore all these attack vectors.
Worst case is that it's a keylogger.

>> No.4632455

>>4632378
Every single time you've inputted your private key is a possible point of interception. Clearly you haven't deleted your browsing history so you should be able to recreate and note each of these points. From moving your tokens out of Binance to them being stolen.

I don't think you should simply blame Etherdelta or Mew until you figure how exactly your tokens were stolen from you. Otherwise you may not truly know if you're still compromised or not.
