Hey 9gag,

Planning to get my masters in financial engineering in a year. Are any of you not neets, and those that aren't any experience with this field or advise? In particular which elective tracks are the best?

It's a hard degree and you'll be wagecucking all your life working long hours in a stressful job

And you're still an IT guy not a trader or investment banker, it's low prestige

I'm a graduate student in Public Administration.

Sadly, that means I can't help you with your financial engineering stuff.

Meh I don't think it's worthwhile. It's a whole lot of extra math and a ton of coding and you aren't a trader at the end of the day.

It's also not as profitable as it used to once be as well, you can make a comparable salary in financial/data analysis; You'll make like ~30k a year less on average but have a way better work life balance, additionally you only need a bachelor's to acquire those positions and instead you can use that time getting a masters to get a MBA or something that gives you more leverage and the ability to actually climb the ladder.

I'm going to sleep so last serious post,

If you are smart and really love tech and coding go for it, expect it to be 50%+ Chinese students on your master's degree

Looking at my linkedin right now for my course a top 5 UK masters, what alumni are doing 2 years later

capital markets analyst
quantitative analyst
market risk analyst
risk analyst & developer
big data developer
portfolio manager

RBS
HSBC
Santander
Deutsche
And a lot of companies I haven't heard of

If you mean in just financial terms, actuaries make less money starting and make less money in the long term but the pay structure is better in terms of just getting salary bumps. Masters in finance is too broad to narrow it down to just one thing.

In terms of anything other than the pay that depends on you. What do you actually want to do in the long term?

I know two people who did masters in financial engineering from Carnegie Mellon and ended up becoming traders earning 7 figure salaries (bonus included).
