I've never understood Kidz Bop even when I was a kid. It felt like pirated music that was $5 cheaper than NOW CDs.

Parents "don't have the time" to research what is appropriate for their child and what isn't. While the overachieving parents would make a mixtape or just let their kids listen to bad music with swears, the lazier parents (or ones who want to spend as little time as possible with their kids) wants a preapproved way to entertain their children and will pay for that. And since they are dumb enough to pop out crotch fruit and a lot of them were too busy with their significant other to care about technology, you get a lot of dumb people who will gladly pay for this garbage. (I know, so edgy, I'm sorry)

It's not a surprise they make profit with covers as good as this.

I work at the record label responsible for Kidz Bop (marketing). The owners were 2 graduates from NYU Law which helped them get the legal business out of the way when it first came out. If you look at the label it's on, some very interesting artists are managed in conjunction with Kidz Bop (lots of metal bands on our roster). Kidz Bop is Razor & Tie Record's cash cow. They have Kidz Bop tours and stuff. I can answer more questions if you guys want. It's honestly not too interesting.

It's hard to tell. Razor & Tie which publishes Kidz Bop is a private company. Private companies do not file with the SEC and have no obligation to make their financial information public.

But considering they haven't had an album sell more than 500k copies since 2006, I doubt the overall revenue isn't much compared to similar collaboration publishing.

Even Now That's What I Call Music has suffered. Back in 2001, Now 7 sold over 600k copies it's first week. These days, it's only managing to sell 50-80k in first week sales on new Now CDs.

The music industry suffers a lot from piracy. The money flow now has been growing from performances and copyright leases to companies like internet radio. Album sales aren't as much of an impact to an artists success as it was 10-15 years ago when people got rich off album sales. Now artists are constantly running cross country tours and more publicity than they have ever been.
