First of all, you have to remember that Bitcoin is run by the most manipulative people in the world. This is what happens when you have a bunch of shit-class new money teamed up with dudes who got kicked out of the finance industry for being unethical, operating in a new field that is essentially unregulated. Psychos with not even the illusion of laws and consequence, operating mostly in anonymity. >And something like 60% of all Bitcoin is owned by just a few thousand wallets.
Bitcoin Gold was designed by these manipulators to pump the price before the real hard fork in November. (A lot of the infighting in the Bitcoin community is constructed, designed create the illusion of competition to attract interest through controversy and giving consumers the opportunity to "pick a side").
There will be more forks like Bitcoin Gold coming down the line whenever the insiders feel a need to pump the price. After the Bitcoin Gold pump pushes the price of BTC back up to $5k, a bit of a sell off will begin as $5k is just a psychological profit-taking signal, and people will sell if for no other reason than they expect other people to sell, too.
When this happens, the BTC insiders will unleash an organized FUD campaign to create uncertainty over the November fork to drive the price even lower to accumulate. Expect a decline from $5k back to $3.5k by the November fork, then a big rebound a week or so after.
From there it will be a steady climb to $8k by late Spring 2018 and by then the insiders will likely have some other scheme to screw with the price.

What happened to Bitcoin becoming a currency. Everyone just buys it and never sells because they think it'll just become more expensive. They're reluctant to sell or use what they have.

Actually sounds reasonable. Why wouldn't they anyway? Has been done so many times now. Just ride the train. Maybe don't sell 100% before 5k but maybe 50-75% to see if it breaks the 5k$ barrier this time.
