I have a bunch of old wallet.dat from different coins on my computer..Is there any way of check the balance without downloading the wallets?

You mean without downloading the blockchain?
Download bitcoin core, open bitcoin-qt (yes it will start downloading the blockchain), close it, copy the wallet.dat to %appdata%\roaming\bitcoin (or wherever it puts it), reopen bitcoin-qt, go to help->debugconsole, type "dumpwallet walletdump.txt", go to the bitcoin folder in your program files, and find the walletdump.txt, open it, there you will find all public keys, open electrum, create a new wallet and choose "watch only", type the public keys from walletdump, and then you'll see if there's anything in that wallet.
