I've never mined cryptocoins before. Is it too late for me to get started? Not looking to make any serious money, mainly just a hobby.

I still make ~$8-10 a day (used to make $20-30). from 2x 1M/Hs miners. The total hardware cost around $2000 though then I also have 2 sick gaming PCs.

I'm assuming you know your shit.

If I happen to have a couple of geforce titans sitting around, how are they for mining?

320-360k/hs each: https://litecoin.info/Mining_hardware_comparison

About $2-3 a day if you mine scrypt/nscypt - $3-4 if you can be bothered to configure a primecoin gpu miner.

Nvidia has historically been shit compared to AMD a couple of very new Nvidia GPUs however are more comparable if not better at mining.

Assuming you use 2. Less electricity its not going to be very profitable unless you anticipate a rise in the value of crypto or sell on a pump.

Use your existing HW to get started. You'll learn the basics of setting up wallet, pool, maybe exchange, etc.

R9 290x's are cheap on ebay right now ($600 cards back in Feb are going for $300), as tons of late-to-the-party miners like me are dumping their HW to try to cut losses.

I have a 2x R9 290x setup that has been running set-n-forget on doge.

If you want to make highest profit, you'll be spending alot of time reading/researching trying to stay ahead and find the "latest n greatist" thing to mine for a profit pop. Multipool is another way, but you'll end up just about covering electricity costs.

I devided to get in to learn. I learned that it's not very easy to extract actual profit, and that I'm sitting on $1600 of "killer gaming" HW and I don't even really play games anymore.

This. You have to catch the pumps, you have to mine the correct coin, you may waste electricity mining the incorrect coin. It sucks.
