Is shorting inherently safer than longing in a margin trade? I've seen a lot of flash crashes but never a flash pump. Is there such a thing? Is there a risk of being liquidated instantly when shorting?

For a completely random situation, longing would be infinitely less risky than shorting. With longing, you risk a coin's value going to 0, which is extremely unlikely. With shorting, you have no idea how high it will go. There's no limit to how much you can lose (you'll get margin called) but even then.

There's a hard fucking floor at 0. But there is no such thing as a ceiling.

I've seen a flash pump with BTS a few weeks ago. Put me from a few percentages profit to being 1% away from being liquidated in 2 minutes. Held through and closed with a profit but holy fuck I was sweating bullets

Shorting advantages:
- You gain/lose BTC. If your short is successful your BTC is also worth more vs. the altcoin in a long it's the other way around

Longing advantages:
- Infinite possible gains
- Risk at most the investment
