30414977 No.30414977 [Reply] [Original]

I see so many meme tokens and pump and dump shit coins on here all day.
Why not talk about actually interesting developments on the frontier of digital ecash?
This will be a thread for discussion of Grin, MimbleWimble, and any other MW altcoins.

>What is MimbleWimble?
MimbleWimble is a blockchain design that preserves the integrity of the transaction ledger without storing any historical transaction data.
>Why mimblewimble?
MimbleWimble is able to achieve Monero like privacy with scaling ADVANTAGES instead of scaling costs.
The size of the MimbleWimble blockchain scales with unspent outputs which you can think of as roughly analogous to scaling with how many users are using it rather than how long it has been in use.
>What projects are currently using MimbleWimble?
Right now I am aware of Grin, Beam and "MimbleWimble Coin". Supposedly litecoin may be coming out with a MimbleWimble sidechain in the future.
>Why mention Grin in the Subject specifically?
Grin is the Bitcoin of MimbleWimble. It is minimalist, fast and lightweight. Crowed funded entirely with donations. No ICO funny business of any kind. No corporate organization. Completely novel code written totally from scratch. MimbleWimble coin I think is just a fork and beam is a corporate style thing that minted themselves 20% of the currency supply.
>Why I am bullish on grin:
Grin is currently ranked #513 according to coingeko. I'm not saying it should be top 5. But it's starting to bottom out from its early inflationary period and #513 is a joke for a project this cool.

The devs take the project very seriously and it is actively developed.
The community consensus is also taken very seriously.
It is not treated by its community as a "proof of concept coin".

>> No.30416282

How could this possibly be a good buy with such a high inflation rate?

>> No.30416377

>>30416106
I guess I should say, if the community considered it to be a proof of concept coin most of the talk on the forum would be about MW not grin.
But there is very serious consideration given to all of the decisions involving the grin project which are specific to grin and not MW more generally.

>> No.30416649

Bitcoin wouldnt even be into its first halving for three more years if it were the same age as grin.
So far the inflation is pretty standard.
But I digress.
They could have front end loaded the distribution to make it more pumpish if they wanted.
There are good reasons not to do that if your project is ideologically pure.
And good reasons to be bullish on a project that is idologically pure.
But that said, perhaps you are right, perhaps it should be at ranking #75 instead of #50 because there will be more inflation than other projects at the later stages.
Either way that in no way excuses a project this novel and cool from being north of #500.

Checked and welcome.
I donated to the development fund in 2018 or 2019 or something like that.
So I have had my eye on grin for a while now.
But I just took my position over the last couple weeks.
I was waiting for things to bottom out.
I'm hoping they have.
But now I think the time is right so I'm going to keep making these threads periodically.
I hope you will join my comfy grin threads.

I kinda prefer Beam. Their implementation of MW breaks linkability, and the network is gonna support privacy defi soon. They are being kinda jewish by taking a cut of the mining emissions, but at least they're making fast progress with developing the network. Plus most community made coins have whales that ate up a large amount of supply by being early miners

>> No.30417421

>>30417096
NGL, as much as I dislike their business model, hedged by buying some beam.
If its not going to be grin then one of these two coins is definately criminally undervalued.

>Plus most community made coins have whales that ate up a large amount of supply by being early miners
Hence the flat emission curve. Its I would do if I really believed in your project and the technology and wanted to make something honest and clean.
I think they made the right decision with the flat emission.
But it does turn off a lot of would be investors.
I wont argue that.

>> No.30418229

>>30417421
Yeah, the linear emission curve for grin is pretty interesting, but you'll still get the front-loaded concentration of coins since the number of miners is small to start. Definitely much better than the logarithmic growth of most other coins though. In any case, all privacy coins will do well once it becomes common knowledge that most blockchain networks are completely transparent

>> No.30418630

>>30418229
Yea I hope so.
I'm mostly a monero bug you know.
But grin just seems like such a bargain at position #519 now compared to moneros #22.
If even just a tiny fraction of the community gets interested and bumps it up to just the bottom of the top 100 that's 15x right there.

How does this follow?
The implementation will be different, the future of the projects will be different.
Grin has amazing devs that were able to implement and pioneer this tech.
And they will be going their own way doing their own thing.
Be clear what I am arguing here.
I'm not arguing that grin should be #3 coin.
I'm not even arguing it should be #50.

This kind of pattern that you see in the charts is very common of any mined coin in the first year to be honest.
Unless they have some really wacky extremely heavily front end loaded distribution.
And the way that alternative consolidates the currency supply into the hands of whales is not worth it to anyone who actually cares about the project and is no just trying to pump and dump.

That's pretty much my thinking as well, most of these other privacy coins are only a couple of years old and have tiny market caps in comparison. Plus it's always nice to help support innovation. I hope MW continues to be developed into being the standard for privacy blockchains

What you mean like 20 years from now?
Grin is into its first year.
Even bitcoins halving wasnt until year four.
Grins inflation rate right now is the same as bitcoins was at the same age.
Years and years out where this matters is eons away in crypto.
And really its inflation will be at 10% in 10 years and 5% in 20 years.
In percentage terms it still drops off.
Meanwhile the flat emission curve comes with several advantages mentioned above.
The biggest problem with it really is perception.
And I will readily confess to that.

I think Epic has the best name of the bunch and had a better start. Also capped at 21m like btc. If they drop the mobile wallet and mobile mining it will jump up quick. Litecoin getting MW will be optional so it's going to be a weird thing were if you use it someone might ask why you're using it.

>>30420768
Epic is another MW project?
I'll have to look into it.

Yea the fungibility is a big issue with only having MW on a sidechain like in litecoin.
In a lot of ways fungibility is the main point of blockchain privacy.
And thats completely undermined by having some of the coins associated with the privacy features and others not.

Dude, mainnet's been going for a couple of years now. Before then I was running a node on Floonet to help test out Grin. They had a problem with money then (Yeastplume was the only main dev), and they have a problem now. If they have money they should consider spending some, because they really need to pick up the pace. The circus has moved on and more interesting projects have appeared since then.

Look at the charts of any crypto with a legitimate release schedule.
It ALWAYS drops off a cliff in the first days weeks or at most months.

i'm willing to let grin be the first coin i really understand, i still yet to know much about cryptocurrencies. one thing i think about grin, is until it is really unpopular, to where you yourself are even afraid to touch it is probably when you should buy it. you can always be too early in an investment thesis... i've always said grin would be the best stablecoin on the market because its predictable where you will see your money, plus its like transparent loss of value compared to the dollar. if i was smart i'd make a grin only exchange, that would be a fun project

is grin code simple for the developers to understand? or does it need a certain kind of expertise

take it as my advice to make money in an wave of momentum that magically appears every some odd years, they call it "altseason": you should buy a coin at its all time low, or at least ranging before this alt season comes, and sell 90% of what you just bought at 10x

heres some largecaps you can do this with: xtz, cosmos, iota, bat, rlc

(btw i've always used the btc pairs to determine when they are ranging/at all time low, and if you want to cash out and determine when to sell if it 10xed in usd terms thats up to you)

but virtually every coin is close to ranging or breaking out of ranging and already 3xed from their btc price, so its not the end of the world. practically every altcoin on binance is near their all time lows. an easier option to find what you want to buy and hold until it 10x's is to do fundamental analysis. the best advice for fundamental analysis in investing i ever heard was to just buy something you use in your day to day life and thats all. there is only one coin in all of crypto out of 10,000 that i actually found useful in that case, and its haven protocol, and unfortunately even i missed the boat on that and wouldnt even get in at this point cause it already 100xed!

some coins i know nothing about but would probably do fine to find a 10x; stacks, hedera hashgraph, enjin coin, radix, honestly just anything and almost everything pumps in an altseason. you get the idea, just remember there is no investing in cryptocurrency, just trading, you get your 10x. also you will get burnt really badly if you miss time it because just when you think its at its all time low altcoins fall another 10x. one thing thats a secret ill put in here, is you can find some qtrade coins and even risk going for 20x-100x on those, selling 90% when you reach your target of course, so look into amoveo, snowswap, nyzo, the opportunity cost is bad so far on them. expect to wait months to years with this strategy
