The medium sized game studios with passionate devs are gone. And a ton of gaming is now designed to farm MTX. When the only way to make money developing a game was to make it good enough for people to buy it outright, there was more focus on making it a good game. Games have definitely gotten worse and it's not just a nostalgia effect.

It's the budgets. Older games had smaller teams and gameplay was the focus instead of graphics. Now we have tech financiers putting trannys in charge of 100s of millions of dollars and you are supposed quality is going down? Dues ex did ok with newer releases, same with hitman, the older ones are the true gold still, fallout 2, morrowind, vampire the masquerade, half life, vice city, manhunt, man idk what happened.

I honestly don't enjoy the super realistic graphics of todays games. Cleaned up playstation 2 graphics were as far as they had to go in my eyes. For the PC, games like final fantasy XI have the kind of graphics I like.

I haven't played since 2018 and I only did so for like 1/3 of a season and I was doing 80+ grifts after about a week of playing on a demon hunter. Wizards who top rankings on seasonal now are doing level 140+ in 10 mins. The biggest problem with the game is infinite paragon leveling + bots. It's also repetitive as shit which is why I've only played a total of a few weeks since 2014.

path of exile is objectively better in almost every way.
the only thing D2 gets better are the aesthetics, though at 800x600 it's a bit hard to appreciate them - and the remaster more or less ruins how everything looks and feels.
I actually went back and did a full playthrough of D2 last year as a javazon, grinded my keyset and did the uber bosses, etc. and let me tell you... that game did not age well.
once you've completed act5 normal, you might as well quit, because repeating the same content over and over is a miserable experience.
