30308388 No.30308388 [Reply] [Original] [archived.moe]

Welcome to the Monero General, dedicated to the discussion of the world's leading decentralized p2p privacy cryptocurrency!

Monero is secure, low-fee, and borderless, meaning users can send XMR around the globe despite corrupt governments or broken financial systems. Innovative privacy features such as Ring Signatures, Stealth Addresses, and Ring CT (hidden tx amounts) ensure that Monero's blockchain is obfuscated -- the financial history of all Monero users is encrypted from the prying eyes of adversaries on a public blockchain, with transactions being visible only by a Monero user willingly providing a view key for a specific transaction.

Monero has also improved upon the scaling downsides of current popular cryptos. To avoid high fees, dynamic block size ensures that the size of the blocks will increase as the amount of txs increases. Further, the mining network algorithm RandomX establishes that anybody with a CPU can participate in mining, preventing the ASIC miner domination that creates a high barrier of entry. Lastly, the mining network will be preserved by Tail Emission -- instead of the block reward falling to zero like with Bitcoin, the block reward will gradually approach 0.6 XMR in May 2022, where it will forever stay. This constant linear inflation means the inflation rate will asymptotically go to zero while continuing to provide an incentive to miners to maintain the network.

If you still have questions, feel free to ask and a MoneroChad will be with you shortly.

My limited understanding of atomic swaps is this:

A gives B key number 1, which is then out of A's hands until B takes it or a time limit passes, at which point it reverts to A.
B, seeing that the money is there no-backsies, passes A key number 2. B's money is also out there, no-backsies.
When both use their keys, the swap is completed, no trust required.

I feel like I'm not quite understanding the last stage of the process. Is unlocking key 1 somehow tied to sending key 2, no-backsies? What would that look like? Excuse the childish vocabulary, that's pretty much my level of knowing what the fuck is going on.

i highly doubt there would be multiple entities monitoring monero transactions at this scale that aren't colluding. the price it costs you dramatically drops when you even have just 5 entities.

its the easiest and most through way to track monero with high accuracy today, and given the huge bounty on tracing monero in and out of markets and exchanges, and the low cost per tx, and the low amount of tx/s today, its a no braner. for exchanges paying for such a tracing/transaction flagging service, it certainly costs less than the cost to them from legal fees and investigations after the fact.

this is just nothing but speculation. its not difficult to simply monitor natural on-chain growth and ensure you're creating between 2n and n/2 outputs for every output you see on chain.

>yeah, of course. i'm sure anybody wanting to covertly monitor monero would just immediately start spamming transactions. great thinking.
This is how I know you have know idea what you are talking about -- the only way to actually make enough outputs to deanonymize the network is if you control a significant amount of the daily transactions. You can't just spam a few thousand transactions here and there. You have to consistently spam a large amount of transactions so you can create decoys that you know are your own.

the point is the growth looks identical either way. you only inflate the number of transactions by what the network is already doing. nobody is even capable of noticing any difference.

you can control a significant part of the daily transactions without anybody even knowing, that's the whole point of monero. nobody knows except for whoever is creating these transactions, and anybody doing this to deanonymize monero would not be detectable from normal on-chain growth. you don't need to spam transactions, you grow your transactions with the natural growth of unknown outputs. it's really, really simple.

just stick to "trading". leave the technology to people that actually understand it.

I’ve been thinking about this too and the only issue at the end is how do you explain any gains realized from eventually selling off XMR? >> No.30315592

>the point is the growth looks identical either way. you only inflate the number of transactions by what the network is already doing. nobody is even capable of noticing any difference.
nigger most of us OGs have been monitoring the network and the daily transactions over the past several years. This growth is clearly organic. Go on r/darknet and see for yourself. We are onboarding new users every day who don't care about crypto, and this is why we are seeing a long term steady increase in transactions.
>you can control a significant part of the daily transactions without anybody even knowing
we would absolutely know because the transactions would suddenly jolt way higher than they are now.
>you don't need to spam transactions
kek, yes you do retard. You do not understand what you are talking about. You can't deanonymize the network by not spamming transactions in this type of attack.
And even if you were to spam a massive amount of transactions, it still would not deanonymize the network like you think it would

You know, I’ve known for years now that sundays are almost always red days, but I’m too fucking stubborn to break out of my habit of just squirreling away part of my check in crypto the literal instant it posts to my account.

I really should just buy on Sundays lol

XMR isn't purely speculative, it's used as a real currency on darkweb markets. This means you can buy it and believably say you spent it all before it went even 1% up in value. (Also, I'm not a smoker myself, but I'm pretty sure you could halve your expenses if you bought darkweb weed instead of paying your slave taxes.)

Pot is beside the point, it's just a consumable darkweb commodity, the XMR equivalent of saying you lost your silver in a tragic boat accident. Except early BTC users lost millions in such "boat accidents" on a weekly basis, and it wasn't even a lie.

the coinswaps currently offered require trust in a third party -- you trust that third party who is coordinating the swap even though they may be monitoring your ip address, the amount you are sending, where you are sending, where you are sending from, etc.
Atomic swaps are p2p. They don't require a third party that buys and sells crypto. The trading happens on the respective block chains.

So when will the atomic swaps be live on the main net?

>> No.30336535

Wow Monero is doing great right now. It has almost completely decoupled from BTC as evidenced by a stable USD valuation while the Satoshi value goes up and down based on how BTC itself moves and barely influences XMR itself.

This means that XMR has its own investors, community and usage completely separate from Bitcoin. Most people most likely don't have the economic background necessary to realize how important that is.

It basically signifies that the institutional investors behind Monero realize that Monero has a far greater holding potential that the market currently values at around $200. What this also means is that if the market crashes right now Monero would still largely retain this value and might even move up in valuation.

This together with the delta inflation between Monero and BTC widening in favor of Monero suggests that the next couple of years will be really interesting.

That said "Atomic Swap" is a white elephant and won't bring any value to Monero. It might even be a detriment as it would re-couple Monero back up to bitcoin which is actually something we should avoid for the long-term.

How normal crypto is linked to BTC is that money gets pumped into BTC. But the amount of trading in the other coins stay the same since they are primarily traded between BTC/Coin anyway so their valuation moves up together with Bitcoin for the most part.

Because Monero decoupled in January 2021 (for institutional investment reasoning) The direct trading pair for Monero is actually USD and EUR to Monero NOT BTC. This means that if BTC pumps. It will leave XMR unaffected. But if BTC dumps it will also leave XMR unaffected. It's completely decoupled.

Currently we aren't in a "bull market" we are in a Bitcoin bubble. Of course bitcoin is shooting up and everything coupled to bitcoin is shooting up as a result of the trading pair being btc/coin.

This is extremely good news for Monero and I'm currently liquidating my stock portfolio to go all-in.

>> No.30336719

>>30336535
Read your first 7 words and didn't bother with the rest.

Monero has been one of the worst performers this bullrun it is insane how badly it has performed. Look at XMR/BTC tells the whole story when comparing to other stalwart coins.

>> No.30336885

>If bitcoin goes up and XMR stays stable isn't that a bad thing?
It means a decoupling which signifies that XMR has its own ecosystem that is supporting itself and growing on its own separately from all other cryptocurrencies. That means that XMR has for the first time real potential to replace bitcoin in actual use case
>If XMR and bitcoin are decoupled why should I not buy and hold more bitcoin now for maximum profit
Bitcoin is already in a bubble right now. Since XMR is decoupled from Bitcoin it will most likely have its own separate bubbles at completely other times. Would you rather buy an inflated asset or a pre-inflation asset. That is for you to decide. If you're a very good trader you can sell bitcoin at the top and buy XMR at the bottom.
>Does the decoupling mean that XMR keeps falling in sats?
No it means that XMR stopped caring at all about sats. The valuation is based on what investors actually use to buy and hold XMR. USD and EUR. That said the inflation inbalance means that over the coming years XMR should still gain sats against bitcoin, ESPECIALLY now that it has decoupled and found its own usecase and community
>What about atomic swaps/tail emission/magic monero feature X
Doesn't really matter and none of these events will result in much of a valuation change. Specifically atomic swaps is actually harmful and should be boycotted by the Monero community as it reverses the decoupling and lowers the growth potential of Monero in the long run. In fact we should have been doing the opposite. We should make it impossible or at least as hard as possible for people that hold BTC to buy Monero so that their financial basis doesn't transfer over to Monero. This would make it far more likely for Monero to actually replace BTC altogether. I hope atomic swaps doesn't gain any adoption and barely anyone uses it when it comes out. That would be a very bullish sign.

I also tend to think that Monero has finally decoupled from Bitcoin but I'm waiting for more time to pass and to get more evidence to be certain that that's the case. I'm still kinda skeptical.

I'm a long term investor active in the crypto space since 2010 /g/. You have to look at the greater picture otherwise you're going to lose out on gains by chasing the short term like how all those guys sold BTC at a couple hundred USD in 2012 and a couple thousand USD in 2014 mt gox fud.

Crypto is here to stay in the long term. And eventually you have to ask what you are actually investing in. My best gains have always been to buy into fundamentals and hold for years before selling at maturity. Helped me when I stepped into Bitcoin. Helped when I stepped into Ethereum and helped when I stepped into Chainlink.

I only stepped into Monero January 2021 precisely because it decoupled from BTC which is one of the most bullish signs you can have in crypto. It's what happened to ETH as well before I decided to invest in it.

Monero moving independently guarantees it will be a top 3 crypto. There are only 2 maybe 3 projects that I know of that behave this way. Ethereum moves independently from bitcoin. Chainlink moves independently from bitcoin (but not completely independently from ethereum). Monero moves completely independent from any crypto.

For me personally as a long time crypto investor it's a massive buy in sign.

XMR has now shown for three months that Bitcoin moons = XMR drops in satoshi but holds USD valuation. Bitcoin drops = XMR rises in satoshi but holds USD valuation.

Three months of this exact pattern stops being coincidence and evidence towards decoupling.

>> No.30337233

>>30337145
True but 3 months is not enough time to know if Monero will follow the large scale trend of crypto price movement.

>> No.30337480

>>30337233
Well so far there has never been a crypto that didn't follow the large scale trend of crypto price movements. Even Ethereum that moves largely independently from Bitcoin still fell to the same bubble inflation and then pop deflation pattern.

If XMR manages to actually defy large scale crypto trends then we truly have something special on our hands. It just being decoupled from bitcoin alone is already grounds enough for me personally to invest more into XMR. If it decouples from crypto price movement in general we have a serious contender to completely flip BTC. The fact that there is a chance that XMR might defy general crypto trends is in itself already insane when you think about it.

If you look at the charts. January 11th is the precise date you can start seeing decoupling happen. From that point forwards Monero is barely affected by what bitcoin does (neither pump or dump) and the valuation gain of Monero happens independently of what bitcoin does.

Another way to look at it. During the dumps what was the best performer? XMR. During pumps what was the worst performer? XMR. Great decoupling signs.

Especially because that January 2021 date coincides with the inflation of XMR dropping below BTC inflation is what makes it so exciting.

Yeah I know I sound like a manic but that's because I'm excited as such investment opportunities are very rare and you discovering them when they are just starting is even more rare. If I'm correct and this is truly the signs of decoupling. I'm going to be a very very rich man indeed.

Hey man I'm relatively new to XMR. I just look at charts and saw the decoupling signs to XMR and decided to invest more and more as the decoupling evidence keep piling up. I don't care about short term stuff like delisting on exchanges as what truly matters is that XMR moves on its own not influenced by other crypto which has been the case 100% of the time since january 2021 when it also became the lowest inflation crypto with PoW out there. Coincidence? plausible. Decoupling? probable.

You basically have three type of crypto investors 1) green candle chasers/p&d/TA/moon bois. 2) fundamentalist investors which is what most Monero investors are and 3) decoupling investors like me. So far I think decoupling investors have gotten the most profit as they would only have invested into bitcoin, eth, chainlink and now xmr all when they were still low valuation.

Investors like me saw signs of decoupling and jumped in in February causing that pump. I currently am still increasing my hold because every time BTC does something and XMR is unaffected it increases the chance of decoupling.

If you don't understand the value of decoupling then I don't think you're knowledgeable enough about the subject to talk about it.

It's not merely used in crypto but also for stock valuation like decoupling from price movements in dow jones/nasdaq.
