A stock split isn't a scheme. It doesn't do anything. It just cuts 1 shares into x smaller shares that together have the same value. As a shareholder you are left with the exact same amount of value and your ownership share remains exactly the same.
It just something that is done because some shares get to expensive to trade effectively. Say I have 10k to invest and I want to invest in Amazon. Since their shares are 3000 each, I only have 3 options. Invest 30%, 60% or 90% of my portfolio in Amazon. If I wanted to hold just 5% of my portfolio in amazon that's impossible. Now if Amazon were to do a stock split 1:10, I could invest in smaller increments.
Its purely administrative, it isn't a trick to screw anyone over.
