It started with a garden in my dad's backyard, then I started to realize that vegetable plants in my yard is only a tiny piece of huge local ecosystems. I just like running my property as an experiment more than anything else. I like bird feeders, ponds, brush piles, rotting logs, native flowers and then just how much wildlife it brings and then watching everything coexist and interact. Then adding my own factors like chickens and ducks, a couple beehives, fruit trees etc. Its more of a permaculture self-sustaining anti big agriculture thing.

To answer your question, start doing research into the growing zones of where you want to live, look up some permaculture stuff like building a "food forest" as opposed to tilling and farming acres of flat ground. If you're into live stock pick one and start learning about keeping them. Highly recommend learning some basic building skills like carpentry, electricity, plumbing. Everything you can do yourself will not only save you money but make you proud of this life you're building by yourself. It helps the void go away when you can crack a beer on a hammock after houra of arduous dirty labor, and listen to birds chirp and bees buzz and feel the real life sun on your face
