I lurk here for a few months now and I have the exact same question.

I understand all these coins are issued in limited numbers and are supposedly safe and some can be used to set up contracts.

But even though a given coin is a limited resource, there are a ton of coins. Everybody can have a coin. This to me invalidate one of the pillars that make crypto a interesting investment.

Why would I give money to someone just to get an entry on a spreadsheet? What ensures this would have any value on the future?

It seems to me all out takes is a new law or some crazy computer science development and all these coins will be rendered worthless.

Also, I don't even know how to buy this stuff. I am in Brazil but have a US account.

Help me. I want to believe.

there are different types of tokens, but utility tokens for example allow you to interact with the given network. If you believe that a certain network will be used in the future (there are lots of promising projects being developed atm) than it's a sound investment.
